What way do the arrows point on both cams on the 3lt v6 in a 91 4runner

There should be notches in the backing plate. or lines by the bolt holes on the top mark as fixya please thanks

1991 toyota 4runner 3.0 v6 cuts out under load


Could be maf or tps. Here are some test procedures:

Volume Air Flow (VAF) MeterOPERATION This component is used on 22R-E, 1FZ-FE, 3VZ-E and 3F-E engines.
This meter measures the amount of air flowing through the intake system. It is used by the ECM to calculate air/fuel mixture.
TESTING 22R-E, 1FZ-FE and 3VZ-E Engines
See Figure 1
Disconnect the wiring from the VAF meter.Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between terminals E2 and VS. Resistance should be as follows: 3VZ-E-200-600 ohms

If the test is not within specification, replace the unit.



Throttle position sensors are usually mounted on the side of the throttle body. The sensor detects the throttle valve opening angle. The voltage of terminal VTA increases in proportion of the opening angle of the throttle valve. The ECM judges the driving conditions from the input signals of the terminals, and uses them as one of the conditions for deciding the air/fuel ratio correction, power increases and fuel cut-off control. 3VZ-E and 1FZ-FE Engines
Confirm that the throttle valve is fully closed.Connect an ohmmeter to terminals IDL and E2. E2 is the bottom terminal, while terminal IDL is positioned directly above it.
Insert a 0.020 in. (0.50mm) thick feeler gauge between the throttle stop screw and lever. Check for continuity between terminals IDL and E2 of the sensor. Continuity should be present.Insert a 0.031 in. (0.80mm) thick feeler gauge between the throttle stop screw and lever. Check for continuity between terminals IDL and E2 of the sensor. Continuity should not be present.

Specification for crank sensors and diagram for camry 3vz 6cylinder


This is a good engine, I have one myself, marvellous donk when you fix the oil leaks !!. The crank position sensor is on the distributor shaft and is fixed, so the only timing you have to worry about is the timing belt fit-up. Once those marks are lined up the actual ignition timing is done by the ECU. Details are here

The 3VZ-E

btw , the cam drive can make noise and make the sensor go nuts.
so we never just throw in this $185 sensors.
not ever.

Engine appears to have no compression

no compression gauge? they rent for nill and buy one for $20
no need at all to work blind.
v6 which one, there were 2
  • 1987-1993 - 2.0 L (1992 cc) 1VZ
  • 1987-1997 - 3.0 L (2958 cc) 3VZ
  • 1993-1998 - 2.5 L (2496 cc) 4VZ
  • 1994 - 3.0 L (2995 cc) 1MZ
v30 car,
did you skip service and that critical cam timing belt.?
some are inteference and some not.

Here you are in "Office Supplies". But I recognize the V6 engine in a Toyota!

See here p45 and 51. The upper marks are the same in the 1MZ and 3VZ engines, and the dot mark on the 3VZ crankshaft sprocket is towards the bottom side, which is unclear in this diagram. Check there is the same number of teeth on the new and old belt.

IF YOUR ENGINE IS A 3.0 V6 3VZ-E YOU REMOVE AIR INTAKE PIENUM,AND ALL SURROUNDING COMPONENTS REMOVE THE FUEL RAIL THE INJECTORS ATTACHED ,REMOVE INTAKE MANIFOLD,THEN YOUR EXHAUST CROSSOVER PIPE,EXHAUST MANIFOLDS REMOVE ALL BELT'S AND PULLEYS ,TIMING COVER .....BEFORE REMOVING YOUR CRANSHAFT PULLEY ,ALIGNMENT YOUR TIMING MARKS ,ON CAMSHAFT TIMING PULLEY LT,RT ,CRANKSHAFT TIMING PULLEY,THEN REMOVE TIMING BELT TENSIONER ,REMOVE ALL CAM SHAFTPULLEY'S AND CRANKSFT . REMOVE DISTRIBUTOR.REMOVE HEADCOVERS,CAMSHAFT,THEN YOU COULD GET TO THE HEAD BOLTS.

1993 Toyota Camry V6 Timing Settings


Get a T belt from toyota. It has 3 white lines on it and and arrow mark. 2 lines are solid and one is broken. Put the arrow facing away from the engine. The cam gears have a dot punched into them near a certain tooth. This is where the solid white lines will line up with. The crank gear will have a dot also. It will line up at 90 degrees from the top, towards the front of the car. This is where the broken line will match up with. With the belt installed with all lines on their proper dots and arrow away from the engine, you valve timming is correct.
Of course you need to remove and compress the tensioner also. I assume you know this already since you didn't ask.
