Noise in transfer case or front differential

I have a 99 Chevy S10 4x4 pickup with the vortec v6, when driving in 2 wd it sounds fine then a whirring noise starts and gets louder as I slow down, but when I switch to 4 wheel drive the noise goes away, then when I switch back to 2wd it is quiet for a few seconds then it starts whirring or buzzing again like there is no oil or something is locking up, but I have no problem with the 4 wd. any info would help.

I have a 2001 chevy s-10. The front differential will make a loud grinding noise like to gears trying to mesh out of sync.It only does this after driven a while on the interstate. If you slow down or enguage 4wheel drive the noise goes away and then it is fine for a while.

I would love to here any suggestions

I had the same problem.. it is the vacuum switch on the transfer case. the switch is stuck open and supplying vacuum to the vacuum diaphram under the battery box. the switch is located on the upper side of the transfer case ( not the front differential) which is located driver side of the transmission. the switch cost me about $25.00. I replaced it myself. if you do your own mechanical work you can get it done just be patient.

Sounds like the axle lock shift soleniod. it works like a p.t.o. you can pull it off and ispect the interlocking gears. you will need to remove the cv axle first and then its the tube on the passenger side. wach for a washer when you reinstall. its centered on the shaft on the shift solenoid side. if you need any other help feel free

Why does my 99 Chevy S10 keep jumping out of 2wd into 4wd? It don't want to go back into 2 wd with the yellow light lit?

A common issue with the push button style 4x4 is that the retaining clip in the transfer case comes off of the shaft and allows the actuator to slip in and out of position. I recommend pulling the solenoid out and inspecting it.

Best,

Joe

1998 chevy siverado Z71 4x4 noise from front differential when in 2 hi, no noise in 4 hi or low. Changed gear lube lube, went for drive no noise. Next day noise came back, any help

Are you sure that the noise isn't coming from the transfer case? The front dif shouldn't care what gear your transfer case is in, it is either receiving power or it isn't.

I have a 1990 Chevy Suburban 1500 4X4 with a 700r4 and it just will not go in to drive or reverse in 2wheel drive but when in 4wheel drive it moves in drive but it does move at all in reverse. What is...

Transfer case is bad. My first guess. If the transmission were bad it wouldn't move at any position. Is there any noise? You have 4 possibilities, Front and rear differentials, transfer case, and the transmission.

Is there an electric or vacuum switch on a 2001 chevy blazer

There are 2 models here the push button will flash if the system is not engaging or disengaging properly . If front drive shaft is turning. That is with car raised and supported . if front drive axles do not turn then the axle actuator is not engaging axle shaft passenger side. Remove actuator and manually engage shifting collar with a screwdriver still does not turn then inner axle is twisted.

Chevy tahoe gear differential

remove the drain plugs from the diff units and check for metal bits. Check for metal in the transfer case oil as it sounds like a bearing in the diff section of the transfer case has failed.. There is a small diff here to allow the front wheels to travel at a different speed to the rear unit to allow for driving over un even surfaces or speed bumps.

Check the transfer case motor that engauges the front differential into 4wd.Sounds like this motor might be faulty or sticking.

Have a 1993 f150 4x4 transfer case sounds like its engaging but there is a grinding noise when she goes in 4x4 only checked transfer case its fine could the hubs be gone over the summer with out use.

Try removing the front drive shaft from the transfer case to the front differential. With the vehicle on 4 jack stands and the front drive shaft removed attempt to place the vehicle into 4 WD. You may have to start the engine if the vehicle uses a vacuum actuator module to engage the front wheels. When you get an indication that the vehicle is in 4WD try turning the front wheels by hand and see it you hear the same grinding noise .... engage the hubs and try again. Usually if the transfer case is ok then the problem is in the front differential or one of the many universal joints that connect all of the elements together. Check the U joints on the front drive shaft for play as well as the U joints on each of the front wheels.

My 89 chevy s-10 pickup 4 wheel drive doesnt work. the transfer case goes into gear but the front hubs seem like they dont lock in i was told it was a fuse or a vaccuum line but i have never heard of...

On the 1989 s10 it has a vacuum actuator that actually locks the front differential in ,you need to check that first, those go bad real often, and without it. There's no way it will lock in the axle, the transfer case will lock in ,but the front differential uses a actuator. It 's located under the battery tray and there is a cable towards the front of the differential. Id say the actuator cable has gone out, most parts stores can get you one ,that what goes wrong with those 99% of the time and it only takes about 5 minutes to change it out. Good luck but check the vacuum line to the actuator under the battery tray.
