Audi engine oil leak?

Hi,

My car has been sitting in my garage for the last few weeks, becuase I am trying to sell it. Recently, 3 months ago, I had the timing belt changed.

Yesterday, I started my car to let it run a little. when I shut it off I saw smoke coming from the engine. On the drivers side of the engine. I noticed engine oil leaking up by the upper bolts.

The car isn't smoking out of the exaust. I am concerned, because it has just been sitting there.

Thank you. Is this in the same area as the timing belt? Or is that in a totally different part of the engine? If so, wouldn't they change those when the do the timing belt job?

I usually bring my Audi A4 Quatro to the dealership but recently brought my Audi for an oil change to another place of business. I recieved a call from the mechanic and was told the valve cover gasket was leaking and needed to be replaced. I told the mechanic I would bring my car to the dealership and have them look at the issue. When I woke up the following day there was an puddle of oil under my car. I have never had oil leaking from my vechicle and it only has 50,000 miles on it. Is this a normal problem, is it possible that the mechanic caused this issue, and how much damage to my wallet am I looking at?

    Thanks!!!

Sounds like a leaking valve cover gasket. The parts are around $50 to do both cylinder heads from www.ecstuning.com. It's not a major issue, but it may be a sore point to a potential buyer.

Nope, they're separate. They may have changed the cam seals, but the valve cover gaskets are separate. Which engine do you have? I can describe it better if I know that.

OK, same engine as in my A4. Under the hood, you have the "beauty covers" - the two on the sides that have the "5V" badges on them? They are screwed onto the valve covers. Take them off and the metal pieces there are the valve covers. The gaskets are where the covers attach to the cylinder heads. The small bolts along the lower edge of the valve covers - is that where you're seeing the leakage? If so, you need valve cover gaskets. If not, please describe where you're seeing the oil and we'll figure out what you are dealing with.

Check Engine Light On - Occasionally Stalls when shift to reverse.

If the check engine light is on, there has to be a code stored in the engine computer or body computer.
You may need to try another parts store, or a shop that has a scanner instead of a simple code reader.

Oil out of the exhaust would mean worn rings, worn valve stem seals or both. This would usually be accompanied by white smoke exiting the tailpipe. (mileage in the region of 100000miles plus??) Another explanation could be a cracked cylider head.
Repair entails an engine rebuild/replacement on all 3 possibilities. If you have a backyard mechanic handy you could always swop out the old engine with something from a breaker's yard although that presents a whole new set of problems as you never really know what you get.

Check the coolant temperature sensor housing in back of the engine. This is made out of plastic on some model years A4 and eventually leaks coolant.

Oil light flashing, last oil change 7 wks ago

I belive they didn't reset the oil light timer. I belive the sequence is 1. key on (not acc with engine off)
2. step on the brake pedal 5 times within 10 seconds. 3. key off. 4. start car. 5. check if the light went out. you may have to try it a few times to get it.
