Mass air meter problems???

My 92 volvo 960 Mass air meter went bad; I tried several "used" units I found at the wrecker; and my car still has the same problems. So I got a remanufactured one for 380 bucks; put it in same problem.

Assuming that your problem is the MAF is reporting an error, there are a few things you might want to try. The MAF (Mass air flow sensor - also called a mass air meter) determines the amount of air flowing from the filter box through the intake hose to the breather of the vehicle. If your filter is plugged or dirty, or if there is excessive moisture or oil in the filter/filter box it can cause a MAF error. If there is a blockage you will also get an error. Another very likely problem: In many vehicles the wiring harnesses are NOT very well shielded and suspended. The more sensors and electroncis that are added, the more wiring, and the more likely some will eventually break, melt, short, etc.

Try tracing the wiring harness from the connector at the MAF back to where it joins other wires. Check for breaks, cracks in the coating, shorts, or possibly even a disconnected connector at some other point. Check to see if any bundles of wiring are stretched very tightly, for instance over wheel wells or around corners. You may have a simple solution right in front of you.

I'm looking for a timing cam cover for a 1996 Volvo 960

Hi there well here's a link to get the parts = http://www.swedishautoparts.com/960/Volvo-960-engine-gaskets-&-seals.html .The oil pan does not have a gasket, it uses the same sealant/glue as the head top. Are you sure you have a leak at those seams? Oil can migrate and be actually from a different source. Oil filler gasket, cam seals, oil cooler orings, oil separator hoses and housing are typical leakers.

And there is no way to avoid messing with the cams, removing the head top frees up the cams. But no special tools are required, it just makes the job simpler and quicker, something a dealer would invest in if they are going to do several heads on this model.

Use the Volvo sealant/glue, it is easy to work with and is worth the extra cost, also it is orange in color and makes it easy to view when applying. Cleaning the old material off is going to be the hardest and dirtiest part of the job. It is tedious and one has to exercise great caution to not scratch the mating surfaces, so using plastic scrapers or some hard wood, I have used chop sticks. If it does look like you need to do the oil pan, that is going to be a real pain, but also order the seals for the oil pick up tube, might as well renew those while the oil pan is off.

Good luck

Hi, Since you have both codes Fuel system lean and MAF low I would bet money on that you have an intake air leak after the throttle. Check all hoses connected to the intake manifold, gaskets, injectors are put in place etc.

Volvo 940 Dark Smoke from exhaust & non idling engine

It does indeed sound lika an air flow sensor. I would actually try a salvage yard one, "because" these do not go bad as often as other components of this engine. However some yards will let you try one and return it if that isn't the problem. You should never spray any fluid containing petroleum disstalates, because they eventually will deteriate the hair anchors(wire supports) within the unit. This could also be an intermittenantly sticking injector.

Air filter oil damage to volvo air mass meter

It can if too much is used or you do not allow it to soak into the filter long enough. You can easily clean it from the mass air flow sensor with CRC, part number 5110.

2001 XC70 Shutsdown after startup. When driving the car shutdown, was restarted a few times to get to a parking lot. After parking, car will start for 2-3 seconds and shutoff.

Try to unplug the mass air flow meter. The mass air flow meter is atached to the air filter housing on the left of the engine bay at the front edge (left side when sitting in the drivers seat). It will be a somewhat flat 5 or 6 pin connector that mounts to the air box on one side and goes to the black air intake tube that goes down to the back of the engine.

Do it with the key off of course. With the mass air flow meter unplugged start the car and see if it will idle. if it does the mass air flow meter is bad. If the car will still not run then there is a good chance the Eletronic Throttle Module (ETM) is failing. The ETM is under an extended waranty from Volvo for 10 years or 200,000 miles.

I would suggest taking it to a garage or directly to the dealer.

Of course there are numerous other things it could be, but the Mass Air Flow Meter and the ETM are the most likely.

hope this helps.

My Volvo 960 stalls while driving

You should start by checking the diagnostic trouble codes. Here are some directions!

These are fairly reliable, with few stalling issues, but they used to have problems with the coolant temperature sensors, and the intake manifold gasket leaks, both of which could cause your problem.

After you read the codes, or have it done for you, post the codes and I can direct you further.
