Rear thumping noise

96 Cavalier 4 door. I have a thumping noise coming from the back of the car (sounds like coming from the trunk). The noise sound almost like loose lumber. When you push up and down on the rear I can also hear it. The car drives and handles well (except for slight hesitation off the start). Could the shocks be going or the mounts?

Yes I can feel the thump from the center bolt on top of the shock inside the trunk. Would this be the shock worn out or the mount assy?

I bounce the car up and down, it settles out right away. I guess this means I'll have to replace the upper mount assy. I hope this can last a while. Thanks for the help and Quick answers.

05 Saturn Ion. Left rear noise coming from the wheel area. New shocks and rear axel bushings were replaced. The noise is still there. Only show up when going over slight bumps and under 15 mph. Sounds like something in thumping around in that area. Three place and $600 later still the same problem...

Probably shocks have someone bounce to get noise going and put your hands on suspension parts you should feel the bump as well this will narrow down

the part you feel the noise in most will be the problem also look at shock mounts and sway bar links for tightness

also check exhaust mounts might have a rubber mount broke causing muffler to bump the frame

is the center bolt which is the shock moving up and down? if so then it is the mount

if you can feel it there it is most likely the mount. with the year of the car i would recommend replacing shocks as well as the mount.

There is a thumping sound coming from the rear end of my '06 Grand Prix. It isn't a constant thump and sometimes it happens when I apply the brakes

The thumping Would likely be warped rotors causing the pads to rock in the carrier, (Assuming the anti rattle clips were installed at the time brakes were replaced?) Turn or replace rear rotors

Have you checked your spare tire? That and the jack for your car can work their way loose.

The rear swaybar can make noise but a visual inspection when the airbags were done should have shown up. The tailpipe can hit the frame or your rear bumper may be loose. The gastank can be loose.

Another area is inside the rear seat. There is an extra seatbelt for rear passengers and the end can swing freely under the seat. Would like to know what you found.

If the noise is coming from the rear with rear A/C it sounds like you have a mode door actuator bad, same if noise is coming from front in dash. Have seen this before. In the rear you will have to remove pass. rear cargo area side panel, you have 2 actuators back there just feel which one is making noise, one on top is mode door and one on side of A/C case is temp. door. Hope this helps.

Coolant light keeps coming back on

yes these issues could be related ... if you have a bad thermostat the steam will thump inside the plastic coolante tank. also if you do not bleed the cooling system it will cause the same issue. there is usually a bleeder screw on the tube coming up from the water pump.

Coming from the rear? I could see the noise coming from the front if your axels are bad. It seems weird cause the vehicle would make noises like that in normal driving because they dont change when you switch to 4 wd

1998 Chevy Cavalier (Front end sound)

If I were you I would not use the car. It could be a bad wheel bearing or a steering tierod end thats about to go. Find out what the peoblem is first before driving. It could be several things. But a "thumping" noise sounds serious.

Sounds like a classic motor mount problem. Might want to get the dogbone strut checked as well.
