Intermitment starting possibly due to security code in key

2000 LaSabre went dark when I turned the key. Tapping on starter got it going. Mechanic claims that he can't find any problem with the starter. He says that the security code in the key needs to be reprogrammed by a dealer. If so, then why does tapping the starter get it going?

Check the wiring on the starter and make sure your battery cables are tight on the battery.

In a 2000 Neon the low oil buzzer went off a couple times until the car shutdown it didn't get hot I replaced oil plug fill oil when I turn key it clicks 1 time like weak battery what is my problem

Possible internal starter motor problem. If the battery is good, try tapping on the starter while someone holds the key in the crank position. If the vehicle starts, the starter motor will need to be replaced

When I turned the key to start my 1995 Chevy Lumina, the engine turned over twice then went dead. What could be the problem?

Defective starter motor or no power to it. You can try tapping on the starter motor with a blunt object while holding the key in the crank position to see if it starts

My car wont start, no turn over, all of the electronics work fine. I hear the fuel pump working. What could it be? I parked went in a store, came out and it just wouldn't start.

Possible defective starter motor. Try tapping on starter motor with a blunt object ( if accessible ) while holding the key in the crank position. If the engine starts, the starter motor is bad. If it doesn't, you will have to check for start power at the starter directly. Possible starter motor/starter relay/ wiring/ignition switch etc

It's entirely possible that it is the starter itself. You probably wouldn't hear any kind of noise from a bad starter. If it's at a shop and that's what they're telling you, I would believe it. The starter can easily be tested with a simple test light. It's only got 2 wires going to it, one large and one small. The large wire should have 12 volts all the time, the small one gets 12 volts when you try to start.
The starter is located more or less under the battery on the front side of the transmisision.
Best of luck;

Could be your starter. If you turn it and it doesn't crank, should be the starter.

Car intermitently won't start - 97 9000 CS

If the battery is good, I would still say it is the starter that is causing the problem. Some new or recondition starters fail prematurely. If it is the original starter it is probably due for replacement...roughly 300 bucks.
