Question about 1994 Oldsmobile 88

1 Answer

Vehicle No Start - no turnover (lights, radio work) then it starts

Last fall our 1994 Olds 88 would not start--it did not even turn over. After about 5 minutes, it started. During the nonstart time, the lights, radio etc. worked. We had it in the shop several times. I believe they replaced an idle sensor, checked the fuel filter & pump etc. Then this summer it did not start again. It has been fine for 3 months and now in the past week, we experienced 2 no starts. Both of these times, after turning the key 3 times and then waiting 5 minutes, the vehicle starts and then runs fine. Any ideas?

It may be your harmonic balance. do you hear a rattling noise when it runs?
If not it could be a bad or going bad starter.

Why won't my van start or spark/turnover

You probably need a new battery. There is not enough capacity to turn the starter (which draws a lot of current); low current-drawing accessories (lights, radio, horn) will still work until the battery is flat out dead.

Where is the starter relay located on a 1992 olds 88 royale

It's piggybacked on to the starter.

Also, check the neutral safety switch - Put your foot on the brake and put the car in neutral. Then try to start it. If it starts the neutral safety switch is bad. It could be the ignition switch. It could be to starter solenoid. Does it have an inertia switch? They rarely go bad but I have seen it.

I have a 1999 Olds 88 that won't start.

If you have no warning lights, either a fuse is blown or the key switch is not powering the computer and the rest of the ignition system.
If you check the fuses and all are in good condition, I would suspect the ignition switch.

Security light, but no start (intermitant)

to correctly solve your problem you need to regretfully take the vehicle to dealership and have the computer re-promed for aftermarket ignition, ignition security not only cut off coil ignition but also fuel consumption

Sounds like the baffle in the fuel tank could be loose. I remember that problem on those when they were new. the only repair for that was/is to replace the tank. before you do that you should install a fuel pressure guage to it and test drive and watch the fuel press. it should stay above 35 psi. and even rise when accelerating if the fuel pressure regulator is ok. good luck.
