Question about 1990 Oldsmobile Cutlass Calais
I recently had a dead battery after this 1990 Cutlass Calais sat for 2 months. I recharged the battery overnight then drove it 20 miles on the freeway at about 65 mph. On the fwy exit ramp it would not down shift and died when I stopped. I parked it and waited 5 min. then it drove fine in town. On the way back it did the same thing. Oil is at the correct level. Transmission has been checked and rechecked and is at the appropriate level. Alternator is charging at 14.2 - 14.5 volt. The battery light came on. The battery tested poor so I replaced it. Battery light is still on and the the transmission still sticks after a short highway trip. I checked the fuse box and it does not appear that any fuses have been blown. I have also noticed that I seldom here the fan motor going. I am puzzled. I took it to a garage and they immediately recomended serious transmission tests and possibly a transmission overhaul. I am skeptical. The car is not worth serious work.
Change and flush your Transmission fluid. Sounds like your governor is sticking! I think battery would come on if you overcharge battery too, that will definitely detroy your battery, in that case regulator will be bad. Rev your engine and see if cahrge to battery is > 14 Volts DC.....Sorry I dont own Domestic JUNK anymore, so I dont know if your alternator has an internal or still exteranl regulator. 1990, probably internal... I will reconsider domestic once they have improved quality,, they've been saying they have for years, but it's all BS! They still ****... hope I helped out.
