Question about 1990 Oldsmobile Cutlass Calais

Transmission sticking after hwy trips over 15 miles

I recently had a dead battery after this 1990 Cutlass Calais sat for 2 months. I recharged the battery overnight then drove it 20 miles on the freeway at about 65 mph. On the fwy exit ramp it would not down shift and died when I stopped. I parked it and waited 5 min. then it drove fine in town. On the way back it did the same thing. Oil is at the correct level. Transmission has been checked and rechecked and is at the appropriate level. Alternator is charging at 14.2 - 14.5 volt. The battery light came on. The battery tested poor so I replaced it. Battery light is still on and the the transmission still sticks after a short highway trip. I checked the fuse box and it does not appear that any fuses have been blown. I have also noticed that I seldom here the fan motor going. I am puzzled. I took it to a garage and they immediately recomended serious transmission tests and possibly a transmission overhaul. I am skeptical. The car is not worth serious work.

I took the car to a transmission service. They checked the on board computer memory for any service codes and there were none. The fluid appeared clean and good. They test drove the vehicle with no problems. The removed the transmission pan and found some metal sediment in the bottom. They said that it would be best not to flush the transmission because it might stir up more sediment in the system. They cleaned the pan, put on a new gasket and refilled the fluid for free, but they did not change or clean the filter or flush the system. Should go somewhere to definitely get the transmission flushed or should I just leave it?

    Thanks

Change and flush your Transmission fluid. Sounds like your governor is sticking! I think battery would come on if you overcharge battery too, that will definitely detroy your battery, in that case regulator will be bad. Rev your engine and see if cahrge to battery is > 14 Volts DC.....Sorry I dont own Domestic JUNK anymore, so I dont know if your alternator has an internal or still exteranl regulator. 1990, probably internal... I will reconsider domestic once they have improved quality,, they've been saying they have for years, but it's all BS! They still ****... hope I helped out.

Check the battery connections on the positive post. I have a 96 Caddilac Deville and had simuliar issues. On alot if GM cars a dual booted connectors are installed on the positive/red side of the battery. Over time and battery replacements the connections wear out or become less effective causing voltage issuses in the ECM thus createing troubles through out. I removed both boots and and direct connected both leads. No more speedometer issues.

Running so few miles has accelerated the aging of the battery - the battery never had a chance to fully recharge in such small trips -  so now you have to replace it a year sooner than usual.
Just replace it.

If this is the tech 4 2.5L it could be a TCC problem. Try pulling the plug by the battery that leads into the transmission. If that doesn't solve the problem than it might be the module.

Sounds like the veh is loading up on fuel make sure coolant sensor to computer is reading right it could be choking the car. Also check for clean throttle body But what the most likely cause is the mass air flow sensor. Blow it out now do this gently there is a wire in there thats what you want clean. dont spray any liquids on it THANK TIM

It means that your charging system is in trouble. Possiblity is alternator...or the battery. Go to Schuck's/Kragen/Chief's/NAPA....they will test BOTH for free.
