Re: I haver a 1989 cadi. and the air condi. compressor...
If the compressor kicks on and off and doesn't cool this is the first sign of not having enough charge in the system. the a/c clutch will always kick on and off while running becuase this is dictated by the expansion valve which regulates the system, however you should have cool air about 50 degrees F for 134a at 35 psi on lowside and 130 150 psi on high side. the undercharge can becaused by degration of the 134a overtime or a leak in the system. have a certified ac tech look at the system and do a vaccum check for leaks if it holds a vaccum for 15 minutes at -29psi then there is no leak and the system just needs recharging.. please rate this

The compressor is designed not to kick in unless there is enough coolant in the system. If the air conditioner is low on coolant it will not run when the AC is turned on. If it was serviced but not sealed up correctly , the coolant may have leaked out. You will have to stop the leak and recharge it for the compressor to kick in. Also be sure to double check the fuses on the car. Flat fuses and block fuses just in case a system was accidentally shorted.
Well yes, there is a separate switch. If the A/C system is low on freon, the low pressure switch will keep the compressor from engaging to save it from damage due to no lubrication. The freon helps with lubricating the compressor. Get you a can of 134a from the parts store and add a little to see if the compressor will come on. It should come on before one can is used. Now for the freon to be gone means you have a leak. So if the can gets you cooling, try to find the leak so you can stay cool.
The air conditioning system need to be fill with gas, there is not enough gas in it that why it is doing that,Hope that help you,If there is not enough gas ,when you switch on the ac button it turns the ac compressor and cut off immediately because there is not enough gas.
