My 2002 Kia Rio just stopped running as I was driving to work one day. I also replaced the battery. I also just got a clicking sound when I tried to start it again. Turned out that the timing belt had skipped and the engine was completely ruined because the piston hit one of the open valves. The odometer was at 95000mi. I had to have the engine completely replaced with a reconditioned engine at the Kia dealer. This cost about $1500.00 which was much better than I thought it would be. New engine is great and I have already driven 90 thousand more miles and am having the belt replaced next week. Not just inspected but replaced. I do not trust those timing belts.

i have the same problem i was just driving down the road and my car just shut off on me and when i go to start it again i just make a click noise it doesnt even turn over i thought it was the starter i just got my battery 6 months ago so i dont think its that i know a lil bit about cars and that do not sound like a battery problem or a alternator i got the starter checked and it pass doubt if its the sylinoid but i have been told about a timing belt my car do have 138.000 miles on it can some one help me if so contact me at thanks

Sounds like the timing belt has slipped and the valves have most likely broken off and are jammed between the pistons and the head.
One way to find out without any actual work being done on the car is to get a mechanic or someone that has a socket and pull handle. Put the socket and pull handle on the crank bolt in front of the oil pan and turn the motor backwards. If the motor stops and will not turn after several turns then it is most likely jumped time and ruined the engine.
My daughters 2002 KIA RIO has done this very thing. Why KIA designed it this way is beyond me. It could have been designed to clear the valves(like most do) when it jumps times without all of the extra expense.

Have you tried to turn the engine over manually? May be locked up.

2002 kia rio wont run for more than 5 seconds then it dies out.

Weak fuel pump, (check fuel pressure) Im leaning towards a Clogged catalytic converter as its the most common overlooked problem that will cause a car to run for a bit after it sits a while, only to not restart immediatly after it stalls, but will again start after some time.

Kia rio 02 died while driving down highway

The battery is only use to start the car, once the car is moving the alternator takes over and charges the battery. I sounds like the alternator is bad. You take the alternator to Napa, Auto Zone or Advance auto part and have them check it for you.

2004 Kia Rio Won't Start Clicking Noise Battery is GOOD

My 2004 Kia Rio just started losing compression and died on me. I tried starting it and it only clicks. I checked the battery cables and they are not corroded and very tight. Could it be the battery or the alternator not charging the battery? there is no water in the oil and it's not the water pump.
