454 mechanical fuel pump , wont stay running - 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Is the filter clogged. Check if regulator bad. Check to see if injectors are getting power and pulsing. Also is there fuel in tank?

You better find a different mechanic . Before calling a bad fuel pump ,did he do fuel pressure test ? Did he test the electrical circuit ? Did he check mass air flow sensor ,injectors , fuel regulator , engine senors ? How many miles on the vehicle , is the engine in good shape ? Timing chain ?

check fuel filter,vacuum leak,fuel pump.

Is it electric or mechanical pump? Electric is with fuel injection. If its fuel injection, you should hear the pump run when you turn ignition switch. If u don't hear it, try starting, if no, turn off then on. It will self prime. Carburetor is with mechanical pump. I usually put few drops of gas in the carb. Start it, if no, more in carb till it stays running.

See if you hear the fuel pump running during the first two seconds of turning the key. You could have a bad relay, bad fuel pump, bad wiring etc. If you have a fuel pressure gauge, hook it up and check your fuel pressure.

I am guessing that when you say possion you are meaning you gear selector and when you put it in say drive.

If that is the case.....

Your problem is most likely the fuel pump relay or fuel pump itself.
Start with checking, or have it checked, the fuel pressure at the fuel rail.

If the pressure is low then a fuel pump can be suspect. There are then other test which have to be performed to see where the exact problem is.

check the distribor cap and rotor buttom, sounds like a cracked cap, hope to help

In reply: if its not the maf there are 2 relays in the relay box i belive its underhood, 1 primes the fuelline to 32psi the second kicks in after it starts, and keeps it running and varies the psi. if the primer relay isnt kicking in then it wont start due to no fuel
