Try turning the key in the ignition all the way off and then all the way on without starting the car 20 times. That will reset the PCM "brain". Then try to start the car to see if that helps. This usually works.

Volvo Penta 5 Litre 300hp fuel injected engine sounds an alarm and shuts down to idle if run at 4000 rpm for 8 to 10 mins. All gauges show everything is fine and the engine oil is fresh and at the correct...

It's a safety issue. The computer is trying to save your engine and transmission. If there isn't a light, there still could be a code. It would be in history codes. It takes a scanner to retrieve them. Unless your a race car driver or doing 200 MPH all the time. The RPM's shouldn't stay at 4000 RPM's.

Why does 2000 s40 volvo turbo runs hot and the fan stays on after shut off

fans are designed to run on after you shut engine down as engine temperature rise after switching off . running hot could be caused by the top hose having gone soft when you rev the engine the water pump sucks the hose flat stopping the coolant flow or the radiator is blocked and need flushing out

Car hessitates

Check coolant temp sensor if car runs okay after first start up. If it does not run OK after getting engine warm, probably idle air control valve.

1992 caprice will start but wont stay running, if i disconnect the temperature control sensor it will start and idle perfectly for about 15v-20 seconds, then will stop. whats the deal???

Temp control sensor when disconnected goes full rich. But then computer senses open circuit and shuts down You need an ohm meter to test it. You need to find the values of that sensor

I changed the engine oil, filter and spark plugs in my 1999 Volvo 940 (1996 cc). Upon starting up, the engine runs at lower rpm and "hiccups" at idling.

Engine stalls or RPM fluctuates at idle up and down.

This problem is commonly caused by a dirty automatic idle speed control valve and throttle valve but always run a OBD2 fault code as well as the cleaning procedure. Buy a can of throttle valve cleaner (do not use carburetor spray cleaner!) from NAPA or Carquest (made by CRC chemicals) and spray it into the air intake while the engine is running, use up about 1/2 the can, engine will try to stall hold the speed up, shut it down and let it soak for 30 minutes, restart and blow out the remaining fluid, shut it down and disconnect the negative battery cable for 5 Min's to reset the base idle control

2002 Neon. Radio shut off, lights went off and heat shut off, and started idling bad. Eventually it staled. Put in a new battery and it started right up. Next day same thing. Is it the altenator or wiring...

sounds like the regulator is bad in the altenator. Start vehicle and disconnect negative cable from battery. If it stays running you have another problem. If it stalls out right away the altenator isnt working.

My Volvo 850 won't run on idle, it keeps coughing and shutting down. it's not running smoothly but once it starts moving it runs well

sounds like a locked up torque converter
will the engine run at idle with the car in part
if not... could be the IAC

However, without diagnoses we are just guessing and you are throwing parts... easy... but not cheap

do you have any diagnostic tools like a DVOM and/or scan tool?

Here is the most common cause of this stall and idle speed issues, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve, they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.
