I have 47 n8 ford tractor that cranks but won't start. Its getting compression and fuel but no spark. Spark plugs are new. Any suggestions before i go replacing parts?

First check points for corrosion and replace condenser if it has been sitting a while. Test for voltage at the coil small lead coming from the ignition switch. If you have done this all, the coil may be bad, and while you can test it with an ohm meter, this test is not perfect so you may want to either replace it or substitute a known good unit. CAUTION! six volt coils are different from 12 volt coils AND there are two different types of 12 volt coils--internal and external resistor coils. Most folks convert these old tractors to 12 volts, but to do so requires several changes besides the coils. More details on request.

No ignition spark when hot

problem in the ignition control module or coil
replace the coil with a suitable voltage rating( some are straight 12 volts and some are 12 volts start 7.5 volts run
it is an overheating electronic component that is causing the fault

1990 964 wont spark

run the fault codes first as there are a number of reasons for no spark --the last being the coil. There is an ignition module ---position sensors --timing belt --shorts in the cap --bad coil lead to the distributor . The ignition module may be only have 7.5 volts to it from the coil in which case you may have burnt it out with the 12 volt application and you will not get any spark unless the coil is in the circuit as it is a transformer that generates the high voltage necessary for a spark at the plugs.

I have a 1990 f-150 with a 300 straight 6 cylinder. I am getting voltage from battery to coil but no spark coming from it. I have replaced it and distributor also and still no spark. anyone got any ideas?

Replace the coil and ensure that you get the correct coil voltage for the vehicle Coils come in to voltages Straight 12 volt coils that start and run on 12 volts and other that start on 12 volt and run on 7 volts. Check if it needs a resister with it.

How do you tell if the ignition module is defective.

Generally she don't run. That said, I'm sure you wouldn"t be posting if it did. If you have spark,it's good. Next thing, check for spark at the plugs. If none, then move back to the coil wire at the cap. If no spark there, then check at the coil tower. If no spark there, then get your 12 volt test light and check coil negative terminal while engine is cranking. It should flash. If not, suspect ign. mod. , however, it can still be caused by mag pickup in distributor. O also make sure you have 12 volts at coil possitive ,key on engine off.. I used to teach this stuff but it's been a while. If you have no spark , it's probably the mod, but it doesn't cost much to test the rest. Good luck, and get back to me with any questions!

What does the ignition coil do?

the ignition coil changes low voltage from the battery (12 volts) to high voltage (about 50,000 volts) to fire the spark plugs and ignite the fuel in the engine cylinders and drive the piston down

1990 Isuzu 2.6 L 5 spd. No start.. Fuel pressure is ok, not getting spark. Checked coil, ignition module, distributor, computer and coil wire. No power coming from the coil. Small voltage going into...

assuming you the coil, plugs, cap, rotor and wires are good. check the cam sensor, If you have 12 volts to the coil using a 12v light tester. The cam sensor responsible for sending info to the computer telling it that the cam is turning, then the computer tell the coil to dispurse the charge/sparks to the distributor as distributor distribute the sparks to each plugs from the rotor of the distributor. Replace the cam sensor, it tend to go bad over period of time.

No spark camaro if your guessing please stop and read the whole post its a single coil and it was replaced

You need 12 volts (comes from your ignition switch)going to the positive side of the coil and the negative side of the coil goes to the distributor.

No fire or spark

Souds like ignition module has failed. Check for 12 volts to mod and replace mod if voltage is good.
