Sounds like the coil is getting too much power sent to it or the power is spiking beyond it acceptable rating. If you have a voltage gage, test the power coming into the coil with the key in the on (running) possition. 92 4L engines can have a few differnt coil types (distributerless, conventional, high energy, ect...) check your ranger handbook for the proper voltage for your type. If the power is right, then have someone crank the engine over and see if the power spikes at all (the voltage read should stay the same or drop slightly durring cranking). If any of the voltage reads incorrect, then you would need to trace the culprate down and replace that electical componant. Most of the time, I find that the problem is with the condenser, but it is possable that anything in that electical circut could cause a power fluctuation.

What is the specific ignition control module number for a 4-cylinder, 2.3 liter Ford Ranger?

I recommened only the factory part for this. You can buy it from most full service part stores and not just the Ford dealer. The part is
MOTORCRAFT Part # DY959 [ICM] (Ignition control module) $176.79
You can also mail order it from a site I use called rockauto.com the price given above is from that site.

4 cylder engin 2002 ford ranger plug wire die gram in order they go

Ignition CoilsTwo ignition coil packs are used for the 2.3L twin-plug engine (6007). The two ignition coil packs are triggered and timed by the powertrain control module (PCM) (12A650). Each coil pack contains two separate ignition coils (12029) for a total of four ignition coils. Each ignition coil fires two spark plugs (12405) simultaneously, one spark plug on the compression stroke and one on the exhaust stroke. The spark plug fired on the exhaust stroke uses very little of the ignition coil's stored energy. The majority of the energy is used by the spark plug on the compression stroke. Since these two spark plugs are connected in series, the firing voltage of one spark plug will be negative with respect to ground, while the other will be positive with respect to ground.2_13_2012_3_20_33_pm.png

Look out under hood on drivers side for a power relay these are known to blow.If its blown it will not allow any power to the ignition system at all.It should be in a fuse panel under the hood.

Where is the ignition control system located on a 1992 ford ranger?

the ignition module should be bolted to the side of the distributor. It takes a 5.5 millimeter socket or you can get a special tool at any good parts store. they should be able to check the module for you once you get it off.
