When you say it fires with starting fluid can you keep it running with the starting fluid or does it just fire while cranking the starter then stop when the key is turned to run if it keeps running with the starting fluid then you still have a pump problem or the filter could be plugged or the carb could be bad but if it'd fuel injection then it might just not getting enough pressure fuel injection takes high pressure
What you are experiencing may be one of two issues. First, it could be a weak and soon-to-fail fuel pump. Keep a close eye on that. Second, it could be the fuel pressure regulator. This maintains proper fuel pressure to the injector rail(s). The reason for the problem is that once you shut off the vehicle, it takes a while for the fuel pressure in the system to bleed down to zero. When you first turn the key to the ON position (prior to start position, if you listen carefully, you should hear a buzzing noise from the fuel tank area for a few seconds. This is the fuel pump "priming" the fuel rail to pressure. A weak pump won't get the pressure up high enough to allow the regulator to do its thing and thus there won't be sufficient pressure to fire the injectors. Once the vehicle starts, the PCM turns the fuel pump on fully, then it has time to get to pressure. Thus, when you use the starting fluid and get the engine to fire, the PCM can then issue the fuel pump on signal and keep the vehicle running.
What is the year and model ? You can use a jumper wire to bypass the fuel pump relay to see if it is loosing power or a ground signal from the computer. The engine has to produce oil pressure for the fuel pump to keep pumping after it starts. Are you loosing fuel pressure or spark ?
i would turn on the ignition while listening under the back of the car and you should hear a buzzing from the fuel pump. if you dont hear it then either your fuel pump is bad or you blew a fuse or sometimes you can trip the fuel safety shut of switch that should be located in owners manuel
Easiest thing to do is make sure you right. On the air cleaner hose theres a smaller hose connected to it coming from the valve cover remove it and spray a little carb cleaner or gas into the big hose with the engine cranking. If it fires up running on the carb cleaner you know its a fuel problem if not the timing belt could have broke. To check that, on some models you can remove the oil filler cap and see the cam or rocker arm. Crank the engine and if the parts don't move the belt is brocken. Thats where to start
fuel pump is in tank, have someone listen at the fuel door while key is turned on, should hear it running if not take rubber hammer and tap fuel tank to see if that starts the pump, also check fuses under hood for fuel pump and ecm b fuse, if fuse blown more than likely fuel pump, hope this helps
