Question about Land Rover LR3

4 Answers

Problem with electronic hand brake screeching and showing an error on the display on my LR3 land rover discovery 3 , 2004 discovery 3 2.7 TDv6 HSE, its out of warranty (have done 22,000 miles) and have been ripped off by land rover dealers on my brakes before and ripped off by approved dealer, so trying to figure out the problem before some idiot tries to charge me 150 quid for investigating something , that I showed my friend and cheif mechanic at toyota that pointed to a basic brake sensor wire in 5 seconds once on a ramp.

I have a 2006 RR Sport supercharged which is showing the same problem. The handbrake continues to screech despite many attempts to solve the issue. The dash keeps giving an alarm notifcation and I am going out my wits trying to find a solution to this issue. Please could someone assist me as I am desperate to find a solution.

I have a 56 plate Discovery 3 TDV6 HSE. It is still under warranty and the handbrake stuck on last weekend with the error message 'Handbrake system failure' showing on the dash display. It was undriveable so Land Rover Assist uplifted the vehicle and both their technician and the guy who uplifted the car said it was a common problem in the D3 and RR Sport. Land Rover Assist have put me into a Range Rover loan car (very nice) but the dealer is now trying to say that the handbrake sticking on has been caused by worn brake pads and discs and as that is not warranty work, I have got to foot the bill of about £300 plus vat! They are also saying that if I keep the Range Rover any longer, I will have to pay for that too! The words 'off' and 'rip' come to mind, not necessarily in that order.

Just had this same issue with my 57 plate Discovery SE - great guy from the AA took the small plate off that sits immediately to the rear of the hanbrake button in the central console - he then hooked a wire around the cable you see in there and gave it a mighty tug. The result is that my brake is now disengaged (rather than stuck-on as before) and LR will need to cure the source of the problem under warranty. Car is automatic so can use "park" until full repair.

I have a 07 Dicovery 3 the electronic handbrake stuck approx 3 months ago with a hellish screeching noise.
landrover repaired this under warranty and then 2 weeks later i had a rear brake pad burn out and Landrover replace the pads for free?
Just had the electronic brake do the same again its now in Landrover and I am told they cannot get the part for six weeks as this is a very common problem.
I just hope they have fixed this problem on the Disovery 4.

Have Discovery 3 05 plate. Handbrake has 'failed' outside my sister's house, in front of large marquee that her daughter is due to celebrate her wedding in tomorrow afternoon. That aside - AA cannot do anything. Manual override was previous solution to this problem (once before, about 3 years ago) - but AA man could not do this, as 'motor' seems to have failed. We are trying all sorts right now, as have only 14 hours to go until disaster for wedding plans - HELP????

Right in the middle of trying to get resolution for EPB sticking on now between LR Dealership and LR Customer Relations. My first concern was being asked by the LR dealership for authorisation (money) to diagnose whether the fault was 'retail' or 'warranty' - they then phoned back to ask for another two hours authority (money) for further investigation as they had 'used up' the first hour's authority in 'getting the vehicle on the ramp and stripping it down'. Lo and behold the vehicle has no manufacturing defect and cannot be claimed under warranty! Nonetheless the vehicle was undriveable with the EPB stuck on and making a horrendous screeching noise when the engine was turned on. The car has been fantastic to date and this is the first thing that has not worked as it should on the vehicle - apparently water has got into the braking system and caused corrosion and the rear pads to 'freeze' onto the discs. It is clear that either the vehicle is not fit for purpose or there is a design fault with the EPB and how it functions on 'the best 4 by 4 by far' - let's see whether the warranty proves to be the best by far by far when put under pressure. As to the use of the vehicle I have to confess it is only used on the school run and has never even seen a bit of mud! It transports 6 children to and from daily and takes one car off the road by so doing.
Will update as to progress and any useful insights to help others who may have to endure the same shenanigans with trying to get proper service on a vehicle that is within warranty and service guidelines.

Disco fever - i'm having teh same problem did you resolve yours and if so how?

  • Andy Bass May 16, 2013

I am in France and I had the Hand Brake seize up on me, that resulted in the motor (whatever they are called) failing too. So completely stuck with no way of moving the Disco 3. Contacted L/Rover and asked if, because it was a manufacturing fault, I could claim and they informed me I would have to pay and then they would discuss the matter of who was to blame. Well 1,500 euros later and I'm about to go over to the UK and have it out with the Dealership before going to see a Lawyer about it. Too many people with he same faults for this not to be a manufacturing fault and therefore the parts or the system Land Rover employ should be designated a factory recall and repaired as such.

The solution is obvious to me. Either Land Rover replace the system with an alternative one at no cost to those affected or we all take out a Class Action against Land Rover and force them to do the right thing by the many people affected by the sticking Hand-Brake and burned out Actuators / Motors we are having to deal with.

hi
yes you will have to take the fan off to get to the tensioner
and the alternator once the fan is off (with a 27or32 spanner i think) everything else is easy-ish. dont be shy to give it ago people, Alternators are easy to do even on big 4x4s like the discovery 3 tdv6.
hope that helps
thanks

HOW DO YOU RESET THE SERVICE INTERVAL INDICATOR ON A 2006 DISCOVERY 3 TDV6

You can take it to a garage that can run diagnostics on your vehicle, as you need to plug in a laptop that has the diagnostic program on it and switch off the indicator. This also goes for engin mangement lights, airbag warning lights etc. As long as the garage has the correct diagnostic program they caan reset all the dash lights you want resetting. Hope this helps ;)

Range Rover Sport Pinion and introduction

This new five-passenger premium sport-utility vehicle filled a price gap between Land Rover's LR3 and its ultraluxury Range Rover models. In fact, the all-wheel-drive Range Rover Sport was smaller than either, designed to compete with "high-performance" SUVs such as V8 versions of the BMW X5 and Porsche Cayenne, as well as Cadillac's SRX. Based on the seven-passenger LR3's body-on-frame structure, the Range Rover Sport came as the HSE model with a 300-horsepower, 4.4-liter V8, and in Supercharged trim with a 390-horsepower, 4.2-liter V8. Both engines were sourced from Jaguar, which was owned by Land Rover's parent company, Ford. A six-speed automatic with manual shift gate was the sole transmission. All-wheel drive with low-range gearing was standard, and included Land Rover's Terrain Response system, designed to automatically tailor AWD performance to specific off-road conditions. Also included were a height-adjustable air suspension, antiskid/traction control, and antilock four-wheel disc brakes. The Supercharged model came with 20-inch wheels and Brembo-brand front brakes. On the HSE, 19-inch tires were standard and 20-inch optional. Both models contained front side airbags, head-protecting curtain side airbags, and a navigation system. Standard on the Supercharged model and available for the HSE were wood interior trim, heated seats, and Land Rover's Dynamic Response suspension system, designed to counteract body lean in turns. Satellite radio, wireless cell phone link capability, and rear DVD entertainment were options. Adaptive cruise control was available for the Supercharged edition.
