Question about Toyota Avalon
P0440 error code (Evap Malfunction) on 2001 Toyota 4Runner with 90K for miles and no previous problems at all. I had a free computer scan done at an auto parts store and had it reset hoping I had just not properly tightened the gas cap. But the lights came back on after a weekend of driving. I'm hoping it's not the charcoal canister like I've been reading about, because of the cost to have it fixed. Any suggestions what to do from here before I take it to a garage for further investigation?

most p0440 codes are related to gas cap problem check cap and reset code if it the problem code pops problem with a fuel line follow lines from filler neck down and under vehicle[ look for smell of gas or cracked line] all the way up to throttle body if have leak fix asap

you have to understand that there is a leak in the system other than the gas cap for the evaporative system. The system needs to be professionally closed, and smoke introduced into to find the leak, and a through component check, eg.. purge valve vapor canister vent solenoid all functioning correctly

most of the time your problem is going to be a bad gas cap if the cap is good check your fuel lines under the vehicle and under hood for a poss fuel leak or smell of gas [vapor]
