I would check wiring.....make sure that both the ground and teh positive posts and wires are free of corrosion.....if they have corrosion clean and repair it....should be an easy fix.

If it starts and runs, it's not the security. Most common things I have found to drain the battery are. The alternator(even though it is putting out the voltage), the starter, the interior lights(wiring here) and the radio (Internal problems)

The alternator has 3 wires. 1 to battery, 1 to ground,1 to selenoid. (maybe more depending on car) A commom mistake is to switch the selenoid and battery wires. wires. Try switching them even though it might not seem right. My old mustang said "B" on alternator so i put that to the battery. I was wrong. cost me 85 bucks for them to just switch a wire. So maybe try switching em.

Headlights drain batery when driving alternator good though

The alternator must be on it's last leg, pumping out only enough juice to keep the dash light from coming on and not enough to run the car and the lights at the same time. Make sure the belt is tight, If the battery stays charged enough to start every day, I would blame the alternator. Taking the part to the auto store to get it checked will tell you.

Return the battery and get another, sometimes because the battery set there too long and won’t work, I had twice when I had my Union 76 Station, after you try it, if you still can not start your son’s car. Let discuss more.
