You have to dismantlement the top part of the engine to get the back 3 spark plugs. Remove the air intake. I own a Mazda Tribute and I just replaced mine.

Why is there cylinder 2 misfire?

It may just be a coil breaking down or a bad spark plug. Try swapping one of the coils over with the faulty one and see if the misfire happens on that cylinder and cylinder 2 runs fine. If it does then swap the faulty one for a new coil. Don't know about your car but most now have individual coils for each cylinder that fit directly onto each spark plug.

Why is there a cylinder 2 misfire?

Check these three things in the misfiring cylinder: spark, gas, and compression. One of them is wrong or missing. For spark check the spark plug and wire. Make sure you have spark on the plug wire, a strong blue spark. For gas, the fuel/air mixture may be wrong. Does the fuel injector pulse, putting gas into the cylinder? Possibly you may have a leaking injector or a clogged injector.

If gas and spark seem okay, you need to check compression in the cylinder. Low compression will cause a misfire. If compression is 20 or 25% lower than adjacent cylinders, that could be causing a misfire. For example, say numbers 1 and 3 cylinders had about 150 psi compression. 80% of 150 = 120, so if cylinder 2 is 120psi or less, that could be setting the misfire code. Low compression can be caused by valves not seating well, or bad piston rings, bad head gasket- something in the combustion area of the cylinder is losing compression.

We've checked the hoses, and for exposed wires, but can't figure out why it's misfiring. If put into gear with the brake held, the Mazda Tribute at 2000rpm's starts to misfire. Engine light is on. Shows...

You could have a bad coil in the back cylinders. Oil in the plug holes will short out a COP (coil on plug) in these engines, is is a known issue in these (Ford) engines. Do the same routine for the back cylinders, and you should also plan on replacing your valve gaskets/plug seals.

4th cylinder misfire in '96 eclipse rs(5 speed if it makes a dif)

There may be a problem with the coil pack causing this misfire or the timing is off enough to cause late or early firing of the plug.

What engine do you have? 4 or 6 cylinder? If you can find the distributer cap on your 6 cylinder tribute, then you don't have a 6 cylinder. They are only coil on plug, so no dist cap. coil on each cylinder. try moving the coil from cylinder #1 to another cylinder and see if the problem follows, if it does, then replace that coil. If not, then there is something wrong with cylinder number one or the wiring that runs the coil or the injector. On an 01 V6 tribute I worked on forever before finding a broken wire at the ECM that ran the ground side of the coil. It would occasionally make contact and the car would run ok, but then other times it wouldn't make contact at all and the car would stumble and stutter and usually stall. Try moving the coil around first. Ford dealers sell the replacement pigtail to repair the ECM connection if neccessary. You need to be very specific when you ask for it. It's a little tiny wire lead and it's like $10-$15, but it's the only way you can fix a computer wiring harness.
