Question about 1996 Lincoln Town Car

96 lincoln town car- loud humming noise

It doesn't happen on a regular basis but seems to happen more when low on gas. our mechanic replaced or altenator and then it started so he said we must have gotten a bad one so he replaced it again and we didn't have any problems for a while then the noise came back but we don't have any obvious electrical issues. everything works, lights radio, etc. and the cars starts and runs fine except for this god awful loud noise occasionally.

Could be the tensioner, but could be other things too. If your worried, work with the seller to take it to a trustworthy mechanic for an inspection.

It has to be internal. Is it your valves or a slapping piston? (Sorry but internal engine problems are hard to diagnose without tearing down the engine)

When car is running making a loud noise and it idles up

if its a howling noise or humming noise its the idle speed selonoid. It is located on the intake. It is silver in color about six inches long. Try tapping on it lightly the noise may stop but you should replace it, it's easy to replace and is common part at most auto parts store.

96 lincoln town car- loud humming noise

I had experienced the same problem with my 93 TC. I'll try to make it short. Replace the Idle Control Valve. Cost me $50 at AutoZone. It has a electronic plunger that has a rubber o ring on the end of it. It separates two air chambers inside the valve. When the rubber gets old and the plunger is suppose to cut off the air coming in from one chamber to the other, the air gets sucked between the chambers across the old rubber causing the humming noise. That is also why the engines revs up and down and wont idle right. It is located between the firewall and the back of the motor just to the left (drivers side) of the throttle control assembly. When you look up on the internet on how to replace it, it will tell you to remove all the housing surrounding the wiper blade control arms and assembly so that you can access it. If you take your time, just remove some of the hoses and wires connected around it and you can access it without removing all that ****. Only has two screws to it that point up and can be reached with a ratchet and extension. Car runs great now and finally got rid of that noise.
