Question about 1993 Ford Ranger SuperCab

Sputtering-missing-vibrating-knocking-backfire-bucking Sometimes my 2.3L runs great. Then for no apparent reason it will start vibrating and bucking, along with a huge loss of power, even backfiring. I have to mash the gas to maintain 45mph. Its almost like one of the coil packs stops working. I can smell fuel while this is happening. At idle it will still sputter and vibrate and want to die. Plugs/wires are new (thought it might have been a shorted wire) Sometimes it will buck a few times then go back to running good, other times it continues bucking and sputtering till I shut it off and let it sit for a long while. It does have a check engine light on but no one near me has OBD1 equipment to download the codes.

    Yeah i'm dealing with the exact same problem with my 1993 Ranger xlt 4.0 litre. I bought a code reader but have no freaking idea where to plug it in.

    I have a 93 STX 4.0 with a similar backfiring problem. I tuned it up, changed the spark plugs, wires, air filter, etc. I changed my O2 sensors and checked my vacuum lines. I changed my fuel injectors. What else is there? It runs lean and back fires. It actually blew the seam on the muffler.

    To answer where the reader goes: when looking at the motor there is a wire harness to the right side under the starter and behind the battery. There is a port to hook up the reader. Good Luck.

I'm having the same problem with my 90 2.3L Ranger. I replaced the EGR Valve back in August and the truck ran fine (but the gas mileage was bad) until late December . I knew it needed an O2 Sensor back in August but didn't replace it until last Saturday along with the Idle Air Control Valve, Plugs and Wires. The truck ran fine for a couple minutes then started running like a VW bug! My code reader is now throwing out an EGR failure code, so I guess i'll take the 4 month EGR back and get a new one, and see what that does!sputtering-missing-vibrating-knocking-backfire-buc - _549.jpg

    I already know what your problem I just fixed mine and it was doing the same thing. Your problem is the ignition control module. And if I were you I would get it at a junk yard because they cost about 125 new from advanced.

Fords are known for vacuum leaks around the bottom gasket of the plenum. spray some carb cleaner around the base of the plenum and listen to the motor if it starts to increase rpm its probably a leaking plenum gasket.

If the sputter got real bad, I could smell what smelled like weed eater gas inside the cabin. As you could also imagine, there is a loss of power.

Sounds like a worn out fuel pump

If you have not replaced plugs start there A bad map sensor will also cause black smoke and poor running

sounds like a timing chain or timing belt if i had to guess,but unless you are a car buff something that old is not worth repairing.

Hello, I have a 1992 Camaro RS 25th Anniversary ed. 3.1 V6. 118k miles. 700r4 Transmission. & My problem is.. I ran it low on gas, put gas in it.. ran like ****.. missing.. sputtering.. low power.....

CHECK FUEL pressure and take a fuel sample see if has water in it. since started problem rt after getting gas sounds lik you got some bad fuel

With what you say,get the fuel filter checked.Cheapest and easiest place to start.Its on the chassis rail,back near the fuel tank.Hope this helps

how long has this been tank of fuel or more, could have been bad gas, replace filter,, put gas dryier in fuel tank..if it continues could possibly be transmission related..the reving down doesn't sound like transmission though if tansmission was slipping it would rev up..good luck

This isn't answer but a couple of things to check or do. First has fuel filter been replaced? Start car and put it in gear. HOLD Brake and Give it gas while still holding brake hard!!!! Doess it buck or miss fire? You said it ran bad to highway. Explain Please !!! will answer after you reply.

The first thing you need is to have the unit scanned. Check things like the baro sensor,map sensor,coolant temp. and the TP sensor.Also check your fuel pressure,volume and injector spray pattern. I think you will have found your problem,but if not hit me back with engine size and any codes,Good Luck.
