Chances are its a bad sensor for the traction control...that would make it bog down because the car think the tires have started to spin n lowers its rpm level to bring the car back in control...even though the cars tires arent spinning...check and replace.

My 2001 VW Beetle started losing speed when I go up a hill, and when I try to excellerate, it bogs down worse and the check engine light flashes off and on.

you sound like your catylitic converter is trying to stop up. When this happens check and have someone race the engine and fill and see if you have a good flow of exhaust coming out of your tail pipe and see if it is real hot .A good way is if it happens at night look at yourn converter and see if its red from the converter to the engine thats a sure sign thats your converter is stopped up.If its not then if the light stays on go to an advance store or some other place and they wont charge you to check and tell you what the obd 2 code is and post that back and let me know what the code is .Hope This Helps

My service engine soon light, anti-lock break light, and my trac off light are on. My car also makes a kind of grinding noise sometimes. I was told that the sensor was set off by spinning tires. It is...

2 different problems
check engine light = need to have scanned
2 anti-lock and trac light are linked and could be related. yes spining tire can cause trac light to come on

Trac off and check engine light for lexus es 300 check engine & trac control off lights & engine stutters while revving in park. Engine seems fine in drive... Reset lights without them returning...

A week ago, on my Lexus ES 300 (2001), "Check Engine" and "Trac Off" lights came on. This coincided with me filling the gas tank to the brim to round the dollar to be paid. I cleaned the gas tank cap and the tank opening. However, both lights persisted. On the same day, when I turned on the car again, there was a hesitance, a stuttering to come on. Both "Check Engine" and "Trac Off" lights were still on.

The next day, the car wouldn't come on at all. It sounded as the battery was dead. I couldn't even jump start the car. So, I got a new battery from Costco ($59) and put it in. It took 15-20 seconds of cranking to get the car started. Once it was started, the engine sounded fine and the RPM normal. The "Check Engine" light was off. However, the "Trac Off" was still on. I cleaned the gas tank cap one more time.

The next morning, when I turned the car on, there was no problems. It came on instantly as it used to be, didn't have any warning lights, and drove smoothly.

Check engine light

you should take it into a qualified mechanic who know how to do a "diagnostic check" on your cars computer, it could be a sensor that is blown.

Engine noise

mabey check out your transaxle underneath for looseness by trying to twist or wiggle it up down when its parked. nothing should move while its parked. since there no irregular wear on the tires you can cross off alignment parts underneath. does the transmission feel good switching gears? not an easy problem to solve
