Try changing out the thermostat. Sometimes they will not open all the way and it will cause the vehicle to overheat and not start.

I have 84 ramcharger started fine used for about 1/2 hour plowwing driveway shut off would not restart until cooled off 2nd time it has done this?

Sounds as if the ignition control module is getting hot and not allowing it to restart. Had the same issue with a Dodge b-250 van, except for the plowing part. It would run for about an hour and start sputtering and shut off. After it cooled down, van would start and run great for the same length of time and do it again.

I have a coolant leak coming from the passenger side of the van. It appears to be coming from a part that I am not sure what it is. The lower radiator hose comes from this part, back to the bottom of the...

The water pump is connected to the radiator hose.

3.3L & 3.8L Engines To Remove:
Water pump location (3.3 and 3.8L engines) 91153g21.gif

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Drain the cooling system.
  3. Remove the serpentine belt.
  4. Raise and safely support the vehicle. Remove the right front wheel and lower fender shield.
  5. Remove the water pump pulley.
  6. Remove the five mounting bolts and remove the pump from the engine.
  7. Discard the O-ring. Clean the O-ring sealing surface and inspect the water pump for damage, cracks, seal leaks, and loose or rough turning bearings.
When installing the pump, make sure that the O-ring is properly seated in the groove in the pump body (3.3 and 3.8L engines) 91153g22.gif

To Install:
  1. Install a new O-ring into the water pump groove. Install the pump onto the engine. Tighten the mounting bolts to 108 in. lbs. (12 Nm).
  2. Install the water pump pulley. Tighten the water pump pulley bolts to 20 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
  3. Install the fender shield and wheel. Tighten the wheel lug nuts, in sequence, to 95 ft. lbs. (129 Nm). Lower the vehicle.
  4. Install the serpentine belt.
  5. Refill the cooling system to the correct level with a 50/50 mixture of clean, ethylene glycol antifreeze and water. Bleed the cooling system.
  6. Reconnect the negative battery cable, run the vehicle until the thermostat opens, fill the overflow tank and check for leaks.
  7. Once the vehicle has cooled, recheck the coolant level.

Check to see if the radiator fan is coming on when the van gets hot.If it does not then on a 2.6 liter engine.look on the bottom part of the radiator on drivers side for a fan switch that could be bad and not letting the radiator fan to come on. On a 3.0 liter engine the coolant temperature sensor is screwed into the thermostat housing. And on a 3.3 liter and on a 3.8 liter engine the coolant temperature sensor is screwed into the front cylinder head. Anyone of these can cause the van to run hot and eventually die with no restart until the temperature has cooled down. Check the fan first with two jumper wires from the positive/negative post to the fan connector on a 2.6 liter engine (positive wire to open pin on plug, negative wire to insulated plug side. On all v6 engines hook jumper wires to motor. To the left side will be positive and negative to the right. Do not let both wires touch together while testing. If motor does not respond to direct wiring then replace it. Another thing to look at is the catalytic converter on van. Check the exhaust flow when the van is running cold and again when it gets hot. If the flow starts to slow down when the van gets hot then remove the converter(plugging up). After doing that run the van again to see if the van runs ok. Hope this will help you.

the numbers are 12, 41, 55
12- direct batttery inut to controller disconnected within last 50 ingnition key-on cycles
41- alternator field circuit- an open or shrted condition detected in the alternator control circuit.
55- final code - indicates the end of the scan codes

I've replaced the alternator and checked all the wiring still can't find the solution. I've posted to find out if the alternator control circuit can be repaired.
