Front differential making a winding noise and ends in a loud thump.

Will be driving down the road in 2 wheel drive under normal conditions and front differential or the front rearend will start making a winding noise almost like you are trying to force a manual shift transmission into gear without the clutch and eventually ends in a loud thump like the front end is going to come off the vehicle.

Center differential

IF you are in constant 4wd then you will not have a centre diff unless you have an AWD. The difference is that AWD transfer cases have a centre diff that allows different road speeds between the front and rear diffs as in going over speed bumps and dips ion the road It is the same operation in the front and rear diffs that allow one wheel to go faster than the other when cornering. However in 4wd drive there is no diff action in the transfer case and both front and rear axles drive at the same speed regardless of speed bumps and dips in the road . This action produces what is known as torque wind up which results in the handling characteristics. This torque wind up places stress on all the drive line train and results in failures such as .that you describe.. This wind up is not noticeable when driving on loose surfaces slippery surfaces or in mud as it is allowed to escape when the wheels spin . If you have an AWD with diff lock capabilities then check that the diff lock is operating correctly

Front end thumping that gets faster with speed

check for bulges in the side walls of the tyres and check for belt separation. Disconnect the front axles into free wheel mode and if the noise is not there it will be tyre related as there is no movement in the diff or drive axles

Thumping/Banging noise at the front end.

check front-end out, immediately, could be a bad bushing/ control arm, this would need attention, asap, you could lose control of vehicle, or somethingelse is broken, shock, but the control arm / bushing is my bet. get it repaired, unsafe condition !!!

Subaru 03 Forester - problem in front differential, 3 wheels turn

Thumping noises and vibrations can be something as simple as a tread separation(or a big bubble) on one of your tires. As for the one wheel turning---that's perfectly normal. If you grab the wheel that's turning (not really recommended) and stop it completely, the other wheel will spin.

How much in ny to replace front end differential, horrible whaling hum from front end. did local shop cause this when seals were done last year, i heard they have to torque it properly or this damage will...

only if seals leaked out the gear lube.
you need to check the fluid level first,
and make sure your not hearing a front wheel bearing going bad, does it make the noise only in four wheel drive?
before you start worrying about price of front differential you need to locate for sure what is causing it.

AS ALWAYS. Loud noise coming from front differential.

Have you change the differential fluid? If not,That's a good place to start. If you have, you may need to repack or replace the wheel bearings.

Also,The front wheels are acting normal,That is what happens with a limited slip differential.
