Malfunction Indicator Lamp(MIL) on and car shakes

This just happened as I was coming home. The MIL light goes on and the car starts to drive like ****. Also the speed warning(MPH) light goes on when I go like over 3k rpm. The car at idle it vibrates/shakes, like something is off. And when I accelerate it hesitates, almost like its going to shut off. Really don't want to a dealer because of the money. Was originally thinking it was the gas? But now wonder if it could be a spark plug or something.

Its an 05, 1.8T, manual, and it is quattro. Has about 53000 miles I think. I will go to auto zone tomorrow...

  • hihtaer Oct 01, 2008

I went to AutoZone today. And had a guy check it. He said it was 'fuel mixture'. He asked if I purchased gas recently. And I did, and was thinking it could be the gas. He said there seemed to be water in the gas. The gas attendant may have put regular, though my manual says its ok, though not preferred/recommended. He just told me to put some cleaner in, which I did and put another bottle on Friday. He said its probably the fuel injectors. The car is very sluggish, accelerates poorly, and the turbo I don't think its working. Because I don't hear the 'pssh' sounds.

    Got the codes P0303 P0300 P0301

Probable causes listed on the Autozone printout are; ignition system fault-spark plug(s), ignition wires, coil; Vacuum leak; Injector fault; high or low fuel pressure

I have also noticed a smell, might be from the exhaust. Getting very poor gas mileage. When I get to the higher RPM, the vibration is less apparent. But definitely lower and especially under 2, it really struggles and shakes like its going to shut off.

I have the same promblem.do you think it is the converter?I too just put gas in.

I have the same problem, car runs rough. It gets smoother as you increase speed. slight burning or exhaust oder when I parked. I had an 8 mile drive left when the MIL lamp started blinking. I filled up the tank earlier it was down to a range of 30 miles. I drove about 30 miles before it came on. It was very cold about 17 degrees. It is an A4 1.8 quartro. Any ideas?

Sounds like your o2 sensors are screwed up. there are 2 o2 sensors on the 1.8t (one before the catalytic converter and one after). The computer on your car uses data from the sensors to adjust the fuel mixture for your car. It sounds like it's running too rich which can cause detonation inside the piston. This is VERY bad for your pistons. Take it in to the shop and get OEM o2 sensors. Don't buy anything aftermarket.

First thing is to go to Auto Zone or Advance Auto Parts and ask them to scan the computer for fault codes (your check engine light is on, so you absolutely have at least one code in there). They'll do it for free, whereas a dealer will get you for an hour's labor. Do that and then post the code(s) you get up here as a reply to this question, and we'll take it from there. Also, when you reply, please list your engine, transmission, and whether the car is a quattro or not.

OK, that helps. Certain parts on the 1.8T and 3.0 are causes for certain problems (the same part on each engine) but due to the differences in their design, there are parts on the 1.8T that could be an issue for a given failure, and those parts may not even exist on the 3.0. AutoZone will give you the proper codes, but their code definitions aren't always right (my 99 2.8 A4 had a fail code that they defined as a driveability failure of the cooling system, when it was actually a cam sensor failure). If you post the codes, I can define them for you and I'll try to help you narrow down your problem.

If the turbo wasn't working, you'd definitely notice it. However, despite what the manual says, always run premium fuel on a high-tech, modern turbo engine. What was the actual code that came up on the scanner? That's what I need in order to help you - the "fuel mixture" fault could be one of about two dozen codes, indicating many different parts. I need the actual code to start narrowing down the fault. Not a bad move on injector cleaner anyhow, but the injectors are rare to fail on these cars - more common would be an O2 sensor, mass airflow sensor, intake air temp sensor, etc - there are just too many possibilities without the actual code.

Thank you for the tip about the fuel mixture. I put $30.00 of 7-Eleven low grade gas in my vehicle yesterday, drove approximately 40 miles and then the MIL light came on solid and stayed on. After reading the post from StankyHanky, I decided to add an additional $20.00 of premium 76 gas and like magic, no MIL light. :) These Audi forums are so helpful, thank you.

If you are not experiencing any running symptoms, you should be ok but take it in as soon as possible just in case it is serious which may end up costing more if you wait too long.

S.govI just got a new engine in my 2001 sonata. it only has 20,000 mi. A new problem just surfaced- at 55 mph the car jerks and the check engine light comes on. The light goes off when I shut the car.

When a 'check engine light' (MIL=Malfunction Indicator Lamp) is turned on, there is a DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) set/stored in the ECM/PCM (Engine Control Module/Powertrain Control Module). This code identifies which engine management system component/function experienced a malfunction. Once you pull/read this code, you may begin diagnosis. I think you'll find P1529 (MIL On request from the TCM - Transmission Control Module.

Check engine light comes on

A malfunction indicator lamp (MIL), commonly referred to as the "Check Engine Light" is an indicator of malfunction of the computerized engine management system. It is found on the instrument console of most automobiles. When illuminated, it is typically either an amber or red color. On vehicles equipped with OBD-II, the light has two stages: steady (indicating a minor fault such as a loose gas cap or failing oxygen sensor) and flashing (indicating a severe fault, that will eventually destroy the catalytic converter, such as a misfire). When the MIL is lit, the engine control unit stores a fault code related to the malfunction, which can be retrieved with a scan tool and used for further diagnosis. The malfunction indicator lamp is usually labeled with the text check engine, service engine soon, check engine soon, or a picture of an engine.
The MIL appeared in the early 80s along with computerized engine controls. Even the earliest systems, such as GM's CCC (Computer Command Carburetor) system had self diagnosis functionality. When the computer detected a fault, it illuminated the MIL. Up until OBDII, on most cars the MIL could output codes, when two pins on the ALDL are jumped, the light would flash the codes, for instance (blink) (pause) (blink) (blink) for code 12. Some manufacturers retained this feature even after OBDII, such as Honda.

Hope this help (remember comment and rated this). Good luck.

What does code 1-p0650 mean?

P0650 Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) Control Circuit Malfunction

Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) is located on the instrument panel. When the ignition switch is turned ON without engine running, MIL will light up. This is a bulb check. When the engine is started, MIL should go off. If MIL remains on, the on board diagnostic system has detected an engine system malfunction.

Possible Causes:
  • Harness or connectors (MIL circuit is open or shorted.)
  • MIL bulb may be faulty
