You can try tracing the wires from the bulbs to find where they are grounded to. Check the fuses for the tailights. Do the brake lights work? sometimes the bulbs short circut aswell.
check fuzes then look for burned out taillights as the taillights are usually conected to the instument pannel, the manufacturer might have also included the headlights in the circut.

The fuse you are looking for is in the Passenger Compartment Fuse Box, the fuse for the left hand tail lamp (viewed from the rear of the vehicle) is F64. The right hand tail lamp fuse is F63 - both are RED in colour and rated at 10 amps. Hope this helps.
Some makes and models have different taillight bulbs and brakelight bulbs. in other words your turn signals and brakelights are on one bulb and the tailights are on another, or they have multiple filaments and one of them could be bad
