My car sounds like a tank when i drive it, The noise is coming from the front end but i dont know what it is, the noise dissapates when i turn the wheel to the left but comes right back as soon as the wheel is centered. Turning right it makes the same noise the entire time. Any thoughts?

I jacked it up and checked out the CV boots and they still look good with no cracks that i could notice.

  • bradb76 Oct 07, 2008

Also would anybody know why my Emergency brake light would stay on? I dont think its the switch thats on the handle itself because whenever i hit the brakes really hard the brake light will go off for a couple seconds.. Any ideas?

  • bradb76 Oct 07, 2008

I looked at the pads when i was checking the axle boots and there good yet not even close to being worn down. Ive tried slamming the e brake handle down and that doesnt help, the light stays on in the dash. I seem to think it has something to do with the front pads maybe???? Wait maybe its the rear brakes because i thinkm the e brake sets the rear brakes when applied right? As far as my noise is concerned this may sound dumb but is the tranny suppose to have fluid in it? Its a 5 speed NOT a automatic, Ive read the manual and found nothing about trans fluid.

  • bradb76 Oct 08, 2008

How and where do you check the fluids in the trans on this particular vehicle?

  • bradb76 Oct 09, 2008

Well i got the tank sound fixed, it was the wheel bearing, it didnt have any play in it it was just annoyingly loud!

Check your front axle boots, if they are damaged (split, cracked, etc.) sand, debris, ruin the axles when the boots are damaged. If u can jack up the car, place it on safety stands so it can't fall on u, look underneath, at the center of the wheels, looking for cracks, splits, grease leaking out around the back of the wheel, this means u need to replace the axles. Rebuilt axles for my '92 Honda were only $50 each, but there is a lot of labor involved in replacing them. Let me know what u find. countrycurt0

bradb, did u check to see if the brake wear indicator is making contact w/ the rotor? That will make a lot of noise. It's part of the brake pad, and when they wear down most of the way, the wear indicator makes contact to let u know it's almost time for a brake job. If that's it, u can just bend it away from the rotor to stop the noise. Let me know what u find countrycurt0

As far as the brake light, do you mean the warning light on the dash? How's the pedal, firm ,no issues? Brakes seem to work as they should? I assume u checked the fluid level, it could be as simple as low level. Try pushing the e brake release down as muçh as u can to see if the light goes off. Again, let me know the results countrycurt0

Is there a bearing or bushing on the shaft that the left axle slides onto on a 1999 Bonneville se?

i have been fooled by this one way to many times. when a wheel bearing or hub assesembly is making noise, it will sound like it is comming from the other side. i do not know why this is. but one test will prove if and which one. when growling noise occurs, notice, when turning left or right, does noise get louder and quieter as you turn? if so then it is wheel bearing. when turning left the right side will make more noise. when turning right the left side will make more noise. if always the same then, tires or transmission need addressing. the cv axle does not make a growling noise, unless front wheel drive car does not move, it makes a clicking or poping noise. sorry but at least you dont have to replace other axle

Clicking noise when car is in motion

Does sound like your CV joint. When you turn and you hear clicking noises coming from the front end your CV joint will need replacing.

It sounds like the front differential bearings are gone. Remove the front driveshaft and see if the noise dissapates. Also, grab the driver side halfshaft by hand and see if it is sloppy where it enters the differential.

Banging noise when you drive

This is a hard problem to describe, I know, and I will toss out a few possibilities. If the noise occurs when the car is accelerating, it can be motor mounts, or carriage mounts on front-wheel drive vehicles. Transmissions can bang into gear. Drive shaft u-joints can bang before they fail. C-V joints in front wheel or 4 wheel drive units can bang when worn out.

The exhaust system can break loose and bang on the frame. Brake calipers can rock in their mounts and transmit sound. Tie-rod ends can make a knocking noise on every bump you hit. There were recalls on gas tank straps for some Ford made units, so a loose gas tank can bang.

Growing noise in front end of Volvo s60

sounds like a wheel brg, if the noise lessens when you turn to the left while driving more than likely it is coming from the right side, but a brg makes more of a roaring noise.

You have CV Joints in the front and probably are hearing wear from the knuckles have your tire store or service location check it for wear.
