Hey there Merc,

Here is a different answer than just the weight ratings in table form. This is based more on real life experience than manufacturer recommendations. It will also most likely confirm what you already know.

I have an '86 Laredo 2.8L V-6 that I use for work. That work often includes the use of one of two trailers. A flatbed for tools or a box trailer for hauling. Both are what I would classify medium sized, not huge, not toys.

The 2.8l V-6 is fine for flat terrain, but not the most powerful engine for maintaining speed up hills. And that's without the added weight of dragging a trailer. When fully loaded I often find it necessary to get a running start when approaching a hill . Even so, by the time I reach the summit, the engine is screaming because the transmission has downshifted through second to first in the space of three to four miles.

So my real-life insight is if your terrain is flat, keep your payload under a ton. If you're dealing with hills, work your way up on the weight. Get a feel for what your vehicles limits are.

The transmission in first gear will pull quite a bit of weight, but not at highway speeds. It will also generate very high internal pressures while doing it. There is a very real possibility of blowing a seal if done for a prolonged amount of time. Another experience that I can confirm first hand. The price tag for that little tidbit was close to $500.00 for for me. You get the benefit for a bit less.

Good luck,
Mike

RE: Power windows quit working 1986 Jeep Cherokee Pioneer

Hi Steve,
If you have a test light check each side of the circuit beaker, one end on the battery neg and the other on each terminal of the circuit breaker.
If you don't find one that only has power on one side, get some to try the windows while you check them again, the circuit beaker may only be failing under load.

Im driving my 1986 jeep cherokee with the v6 2.8 liter manual transmission. i just replaced the hose going from the intake to the air filter on the right side and the fuel filter. to try and solve my power...

could be the fuel pump pressure output in the line. or a bad fuel pressure regulator. i once, years ago had a similar problem. so i went and bought a electric fuel pump and mounted it to fender under hood, hooked up the fuel hoses then drove home. but i do not know if this will work on todays vehicles. a dealer or auto parts store will tell if it will. good-luck !!!

What is pulling capacity of 93 jeep grand cherokee

Towing capacity depends upon trailer design and actual tongue weight of the trailer and load. It also depends upon the condition of your rear suspension, engine size, the condition of your cooling system and if you have an add-on transmission cooler. (for automatics). Last, capacity is also determined by the hitch rating. Generally speaking, you should be able to pull around 5,000 lbs without problems.
If towing long distances or up steep grades it is wise to change the transmission and differential fluid before towing and service those more frequently than normal.

What is the towing capacity of 4wd 1998 grandcherokee laredo, 4.0 ltr

You can tow just about anything with anything if you have the right gearing. BUT, Your limit is set by the kind of hitch (class rating) you are going to use. I use a simple rule of not towing anything more than double the weight of the vehicle you are pulling with. In towing heavy loads you will need an electric trailer braking system, stabilizer bars, lighting harness addition (applies overall...some require an add on module additional to wiring to prevent system damage), heavy duty radiator and an external transmission cooler. (also, more frequent trans fluid changes, best to use synthetics)
If you will be towing on a regular basis, I'd also look into getting the "police package" in regards to sway bars and shocks (all around) as it helps with control.

Is a 1996 jeep cherokee a towable vehicle? {auto trans.}

does your transfer case have a neutral? if so shift to neutral and it can be towed.if its alltime 4x4 or auto then not above 35 mph for more than 50 miles. if this is to be a tow vehicle i strongly suggest a car trailer. the maintinance is less its easier to pull and hook up and there is no wear and tear on your vehicle.

Seeking the towing capacity for a 95 Jeep Cherokee Sport, 2WD, 4.0L, straight 6

If I remember correctly the trailer weight capacity is around 5,000lbs. However, without an additional trans cooler and double row radiator, Id keep it below 4,000. (if rears springs are in good condition, less if not)

Motor and trans exchange

Both engines were available in that jeep, but computer and harnesses need to be swapped as well. You may want to get a really good wiring diagram (not haynes) to check your attachment points and harness variations. Make sure you take everything you could possibly need from donor vehicle. (take more and throw away excess...easier than forgetting something.)
Good luck!!

My tranny won't go in reverse or go past 2cnd gear

Your problem is inside the transmission. likely internal pressure loss from wear. There is no such thing as cheap when talking transmissions. The least costly (but the biggest risk)is to get one from a scrapyard. (even if they will replace it if bad, you still pay double labor) You know your vehicle & what kind of condition it's in otherwise. Only you can determine if it's worth doing!
Good luck.
