Automatic Trans shifter locks up sometimes at start up

My girlfriends Mazda 3 shifter started locking up when she starts the car.
It wont change out of park. It started about 2 wks ago and has become more frequent.I found that there is what seems to be a reset switch on the right side of the shifter housing ( plastic P.O.S.) If you pull it up and push it back in it unlocks the shifter. But she says now that has stopped working and has a heck of a time trying to reset it at all. The dealer says it needs all new shifter for 700$$. I say yeah right. Theres gotta be some dinky sensor that I can replace. Anybody got an idea?

The brake lights seem to work fine. Even when the shifter is locked. but I will keep an eye out for any thing funny going on with the brake lights. Any other suggestions?
    Thanks a Bunch

I have an Automatic Mazda 3 and, unfortunately, the gear shift became stuck in "park". I pulled the little piece on the gear shift up and the whole thing came off. Is that supposed to happen or am I going to have to take my car in and have something replaced, or re-attached? Please help me.

You might want to try spraying a lubricant down in the shifter lever surround itself...sometimes when soda or other sugary drinks get spilled in that area, the release mechanism gets gummed up, not allowing the catch to release properly...try some WD40 or some other pennetrating spray oil.
Spray it into every crack and crevice around the shifter, and all of the plastic parts too. Wipe off the excess and allow it about 20 minutes to penetrate deep into the parts of the shifter. Put your key into the ignition and WITHOUT STARTING THE CAR AND YOUR FOOT ON THE BRAKES, keep sliding the shifter into every gear over and over again. Try this first in order to see if this fixes the problem...if this doesn't do it, you may need to invest some $$$ to have it looked at. I know this sounds simple, but it could save you some serious money if this fixes your problem.

Check the brake lights when this problem occurs, if they don't come on then the solenoid that unlocks the shifter will no energize on to unlock the shifter, it is a safety feature. Most likely the brake light switch is at fault in this issue.

You say Thanks but rate me a thanks for trying? We do this for nothing, just trying to help, the issue of the brake lights is the most common cause of this problem based on my experience, I think a helpful rating would be more in order

You should definitely have to push th button to get from forward to reverse. If not the gate at the base of shifter has broken and will need to be replaced

Just changed key lock switch and ignition switch. turned car on started it and applied brake and shifter wont move into gear.

1) you must test the wirings color, because if was working before the wiring is wrong. You must test it again. and proceed.
Otherwise the switch for shifter is faulty.
God bless you

My suv won't shift gears what can i do?

if the shifter is moving then it is probably your trans. but if the shifter is not moving from the park possition (if it is an automatic) check to see if brake lights are coming on if not check fuse for brake lights,it also controls your shift lock.try turning key to possition before lights come on dash board and moving shifter into nuetral pos. then start car and put into gear give that a try, if it does the shift lock isn`t working.

Changed automatic trans. shift cable now starter wont ingauge to start what chould be the cause.

Look for connector off neutral safety switch, or linkage needs adjustment. Try moving shifter while holding key to start, that should be a good indication if it turns over when in another gear, but be careful and make sure foot is firmly on brake.

Does the clutch on a 93 sentra have a sensor to start it?

Yes, there is a switch on the pedal, just like on the brake pedal of automatics. There are 2 locks, yours is electric, but the key lock is manual, it has to be on. Which it would be if you were trying to start it, but on the automatic, it goes from the key to the shifter with a mechanical lock, also the brake pedal is wired into a solenoid on the shifter, won't move without your foot on the pedal. Sometimes it has to be in neutral to start. Check it out.

Yes under the hood on the trans is the linkage. Pull that off the trans (should be a clip) and move the lever it was on. If that is stuck it is the trans.

1993 mazda 626: could not get trans out of park!

Ignition lock is activated: You over rode it but still have original problem. Alarm system might be confused. SO....

1 disconnect battery negative (-) cable(make you have radio code if any) to reactivate radio, which works anyway if code was never set.

2 press brake peddle for 5 seconds

3 reconnect negative cable to battery.

use key and twist diver door lock to OPEN (this resets alarm which might have caused ignition lock module to activate.

You should be able to turn on the ignition, start the engine and shift out of park. Hope this helps.
