2005 Ford Ranger Starting Problem

I have had my '05 Ranger for about two weeks. Everything worked fine. Went out to drive to town and it wouldn't start. Worked the clutch a few times and nothing, turned the key off and back on and pushed the clutch in again and it started. I figured it was the clutch safety switch. Went to town to get one on Saturday afternoon and couldn't find one. Bought a Haynes book and came home and started trouble shooting planning on bypassing the switch with a jump wire temporarily. Located the proper wires and nothing happened. After further checking I have power coming out of the start wire from the start switch but I do not get power to the clutch switch. Jumped a power wire to the clutch switch and it started right up. According to the book the only place power goes after leaving the start switch is to the clutch switch or to the RAP module. But this truck shouldn't have a RAP module on it as it does not have power door locks and as far as I know they are tied in with the RAP module through the keyless remote. So I am lost.

    This truck does not have any remote door lock or security system that I know of. The starter solenoid is mounted on the starter like a GM starter. If I use my remote start button from years ago that we used to bump the engine to set the timing etc., it will start. I have a 1995 Ford F-350 that appears to have the exact same clutch safety switch. I checked it and it has power at all times. The Ranger does not have power ever. I ran a jump wire from the start wire of the ignition switch to the clutch safety switch and the truck will start. In reading the wiring diagram in the Haynes manual, it makes me think there might be what they call a "Remote Anti-Theft Personality Module" in the circuit. But it jad manual door locks and I was told that unless it had power door locks it would not have the RAP module. I have not owned this truck very long. I have only driven it twice and everythng woked fine. I bought it from a junk yard. It was a recovered stolen vehicle that the insurance totaled.

    The junkyard that I purchased it from did not have any problems with the running of the truck. they did not drive it. They opened the dash, removed the start switch and it started and all functions were fine. My first drive with it was almost 100 miles to have it inspected by the highway patrol and they had no problems with it. If there is any kind of lock out system on this truck I haven't located it in the cab or under the hood.

    I found a body ground wire disconnected that was causing a fuse to blow. Not sure wht the wire was disconnected. It seems to be fine now . I have tried starting it about 30 times. Took it for a drive over rough roads and then coasted down a hill and tried it several more times. I had an older Ranger that did have the solenoid on the right inner fender but I did not locate one on thie one. I did not remove the washer fluid and coolant reservoirs to look under them but I did have the air cleaner box out. Thanks for your help.

    Do you have any kind of key lock out system that was installed by the dealer? Have you checked the main starter solenoid, the one on the passenger side fender under the hood, start it from there, that will bypass everthing else.

There is a another starter solenoid, Fords have two, look on the passenger inside fender, it is there.

It sounds like the battery is starting to go. You can take it in to get it tested to make sure. Some places (like Wal-mart) do free battery testing. If this is the original battery, five years old, it wouldn't be surprising that it is starting to go.

This may be a dumb suggestion, but have you tried changing out the battery? I had a similar problem and changed my solenoid, cleaned all grounds and wiring connections and after all that it ended up that a cell was shorting out in the battery. Something to check out anyways. 1)check the ignition switch is not loose.those things normally come on before starting.unless2) you have a main ground broken somewhere.rodents eat the wiring harness to build a nest and cause mayhem...i have seen that a few times .check the fusebox under the hood on the drivers side

Truck not starting after warming up.


Haven't heard vapor lock symptoms for a long time. Make sure you didn't get some cruddy gas-or sugar. Try another fuel filter, a big one.

hello im sorry to here that i read what you replaced but i dont see anything about a bad starter solenoid wich is mounted on your inside wall off your pass fender ford solenoids have a mind of there own on the solenoid you will see your ignition wire connection marked i pull it off slowly to feel if it is to loose if it is lightly close slightly with pliers so you get a tighter fit if you havnt replaced the solenoid i would clean all contacts to it including were it mounts for a good ground goodluck

it's the fuel pump. make sure your fuel injectors are clean or else it will happen again
