For the past several months my navigation screen displays a disk reading error. I have replaced the disk once, about a year ago. However the problem resurfaced shortly thereafter. By turning the unit off and on, and by turning the ignition power off and on I had been able to obtain sporadic operation - at least until the ignition was turned off. Is there specific maintenance required for the dvd unit such as head cleaning? Is there a software update requirement for the system? Is the disk itself no longer compatible for signals relayed to the unit?

The data on the DVD map disc ages at a rate of 15-20% per year. As the data ages, the functionality of the navigation system declines. Offering GM customers new navigation DVDs will ensure that the customers have the latest information for their system.
General Motors offered a Navigation Disc Update Program for alot model year vehicles. This program concluded on December 31, 2009. The DVD Navigation Update Program policy has changed and customers are no longer eligible for free annual updates, however, a navigation DVD update disc can be purchased for $199 (USD) + shipping.
If the navigation disc is needed for a warranty situation, the disc can be purchased for $120 (USD). The dealer must provide a VIN and RO# XXXXX qualify for the reduced price. The dealer must call the GM Navigation Disc Center, as this option is not available on the website.
The GM Navigation Disc Center launched on March 15, 2006. There are two ways to obtain an updated disc: * Via the web through gmnavdisc.com * GM Navigation Disc Center 1-877-628-3472
Technical Service Bulletins are sometimes generated to address specific
navigation radio operational or performance issues. When a navigation
radio bulletin is issued, it may contain instructions to utilize an
advanced vehicle navigation (AVN) software update with a specific part
number. GM dealers must order advanced vehicle navigation (AVN) software
update discs as directed in the specific bulletin.

You can try to disconnect the battery to the car for 5 minutes. This will reset all functions for the stereo. You will have to go to the dealership to get a new one. Or you can go buy an aftermarket one at any stereo shop.
Unless it has been stolen, it is unlikely the disc is missing.
This disc the error references comes installed inside the navigation unit that is underneath the driver's seat. There is absolutely no reason to pull the disc out, unless you are replacing it with a newer disc.
It is possible to accidentally hit the unit with your shoes or while vacuuming the floor in that area. Check under the driver's seat and make sure that the unit's door is not open. If you still have a problem, then open the unit's door all the way, press the eject button and check the disc for scratches.
If no disc comes out, then you are definitely going to need a replacement.
If a disc comes out, check it for scratches and reinsert it if it looks ok (as it should). Then close the unit's door and retry to use the navigation system.
I would demand the system be replace, The system goes for over 1500.00 dollars and No one outside of ford can fix it because there is no parts available. I would call ford customer service hot line to file a complaint against the dealer. You are not getting the customer satisfaction you deserve.
The dealer is going to keep putting it off and when the warranty runs out then they will magically know what to replace.
Stay active on Ford to replace the unit.
