Question about 1996 Volkswagen Jetta
My car has always had some little issues here and there. We had a ton of oil leaks at one point (Some switch behind the engine broke and we were losing a quart a day) and at that time it felt like perhaps the vacuum system was messed up? The car has always been a picky shifter... But at that time when you drove it it would bounce like 'crazy' on the RPM. Up to 30,000 to 40,000 down to 15,000, all over. Sometimes it would kind of.. stall? Like.. If I pushed the accelerator... Nothing would happen. But it would eventually pull out of this. This has always come hand and hand with oil leaks, if this helps.
We recently drove the car from Utah to Nevada and started experiencing the problem outside of Las Vegas. We pulled over, and managed to notice some pools of oil on top of a silver box-like thing. We wiped it up and bound an electrical cable that was dipping in it with electrical tape. The car ran fantastic until we drove into San Fransisco. Same issue, but now wiping it up isn't helping. It got us home, but now it's just terrifying to drive. RPM freaks out when I go from stop to go... And sometimes just whenever it feels like it. It stays pretty stable on the highway at about 30 RPM... But.. Honestly I don't know what this is.
I hope it isn't the transmission going out. I was told by every mechanic here that the transmission of a 96 jetta cannot be repaired and the only way to replace it is to buy ANOTHER jetta and put it's transmission in the old one. I'm a 20 year old collage student. I cannot afford that! (Please let me know if this is true or if there is another solution to jetta transmission.)
Ok well this may not be the exact solution but it may fix it. maybe the car needs a tune-up so I would see if that can fix it since i had the same problem with a 95 and fixed it through that.
