    Hi there,

I have a nissan terrno 2.7L diesel engine and have the same problem. Normal days my terrano will start easily but on during heavy rainy days my terrano wont start. It just died on me when i tried starting it after 2 days of not using it. i had this problem 5 times now in 15 months. Changed new battery once. Did full service once since i bought it 15 months now. My terrano is using Rhino car system alarm which is connected to all the doors and ignition + windscreen.

I need tips to go about with my problem.

    Hi,

Just reading all the above as my nissan (1999 TDI) terrano had same prob over past couple of months. Just been having lots of rain, being the wet weason here in north queensland (aust). Just tapped the starter and rocked her back and forth a few times and turned her over. Cool.

Thanks guys, Now all I have to do is get it to the mechanics and give her a bit of attention witht he brushes etc, as well as she needs a service, unfortunately, she is due for the 200K service $$$$$$$.

Thanks again fellow sufferers in car ownership

    Best Regards

The starter turns over but the solenoid does not engage the ring gear. The battery has plenty of power. Is the solenoid control powered through the ignition switch or via a computerized system?

not starting, at first the ignition wouldn't work at all and not its turning over but not starting still

A maybe answer to first problem
I had a similar problem of my terano intemittantly not starting. There would be a click from the solenoid then nothing. Initially if I rocked the vehicle in gear I would hear a click and then it would start. This went on for about a year. I decided to shorten the electrical path to the starter, which appeared to solve the problem for a while. Then it started happening again, same way to fix, by rocking the vehicle. Starter moter was looked at, (thought brushes might be worn out) nothing really found, problem went away for another 12 months. This time auto electrician and I decided that the problem was that the brushes were getting stuck. After good clean problem has gone (now at least 2 years later)

Intermittently there is a problem starting the car. The key turns on all the electrics but when turned further it does not engage the starter.

Check your ignition switch electrical side
Check the relay
Or the starter motor itself must be playing up

Put in a new battery, started car and drove home. Now I can't get car to start. Had starter tested and passed, have lights inside and tested battery to make sure it was good, still can't start car

#1 cause of your problem is a loose wire connection at the starter, or the connection is tight but dirty. Both will cause intermittent starts because not enough cold cranking amps are getting to starter to engage it but you are getting power to other systems. Clean and tighten and check all wires to starter for breaks or damage.
After that you may want to check for power at the start position on the ignition switch.

Hope this helps Mike

No it doesn't mean that you have a problem. When you cross the lugs with a screw driver no matter whether you have the key on or not it will still engage the starter. The reason being that you have the hot wire from the battery going to one terminal and your ignition switch on one terminal. What your basically doing is bypassing the switch and directly energizing the starter.A good way to test a starter is to remove it from your truck hook up your battery cables to your battery.Be very careful when you do this.Hook the ground to the starter casing and just touch the hot cable to the battery lug on the starter. This should engage your starter. You might want to take a look at the fuel delivery system for proper operation.

I just had the computer on my Terrano rebooted, which seems to have solved the problem with it 'die'-ing and surging. One of the local Auto Electrical places sorted it.

The Clutch/Starter relay has a Blue Top and is located on the right inner fender near two other relays. It has quite large wires (12Ga.) and is often the culprit.
