1989 Cavalier Z24 3.1 rough idle and hesitation

I have a 1989 Cavalier Z24 with a 3.1 and it idles rough, hesitation when you accelerate, and a raw fuel smell coming out of the exhaust. I changed TPS sensor, IAC valve, MAP sensor, EGR valve, plugs and wires, and O2 sensor and i still can find the problem.

It sounds like you may have a broken exhaust valve spring, although, like you have found out problems like this can be very hard to diagnose, but anyone with a compression tester and couple other tools could find out if this is the case. Hope this gives you another idea where to look.

No fuel smell but with white smoke probably head gasket or worst case cracked head. Question is what color smoke. If blue or black, time to look elsewhere.

A number of things. Tune up, water in gas, timing, air filter, fuel filter, carb, injectors, etc.

it sounds to me that the sensor your talking about is the camshaft positioning sensor. It regulates how much fuel you get to your engine, so that is also why you have the fuel smell as well.

What happens when you unplug and cap the vacuum line at the EGR valve? Does the problem go away? Before doing this does the car idle rough? If so perhaps the EGR is stuck open...
