1997 pontiac sunfire key wont turn in ignition

My key has always turned the ignition. However, the other day I put the key in the ignition and the actual ignition is locked in place and will not turn at all. Yes, I've tried wiggling the steering wheel. I've tried various things in vain and the ignition is still locked in place. Please help!

As you have done I have also tried, even saturated it with WD. Had the same problem about a month ago used the magic potion (WD-40) and after a lot of mucking around it seem to clear the problem, however now the problem is back and I'm afraid perminantly. Am going to get another key cut tommorrow from the chassis number at a cost of $35 +tax the other option is to scrap as i was quoted $271 for a new barrel when i asked " thats obviously with labour?....." you can guess the reply!

I have a 2005 Sunfire and this will be the 3rd time that I have had to have the ignition switch. I have also notice the prior owner had it done at 8,500 miles. Its frusterating and I would like to know why so frequently.

You will have to have the ignition cylinder replaced in the car. The only thing that keeps that ignition from turning is a little tang on the sdie of it. The only way that tang moves is by the tumblers inside the cylinder moving it. They will have a hard time replacing it too as they can't remove the cylinder from the bore until it is in the "run" position. Obviously there are ways to get them out but it usually involves using half the tools of a good tech's toolbox. if it is towed the towtruck driver will have to use dolly wheels or remove the shifter cable at the transmission to get it to move as it will be stuck in park- unless is a standard shift.
I am sorry for the bad news. Get a second opinion from somebody that can put their hands on it , but it sounds like you have a tried all or most of the tricks.
Good luck...........Scott

while you SLIGHTLY turn the steering wheel, try to turn the key-do not force the key, you do not want to break it.

there should be a fuel pressure test port on the fuel rail. you can push the valve with a small pin while some one turn the key on.
if you don't have fuel come out then the pump may be bad

I put the key in the ignition and turn it forward i see my lights come on and radio comes on but when i try to turn key to start the car it wont turn

The solution lies in the interlock with the shift linkage. Make sure the transmission and therefore the shift colomn make it into park or neutral.

2001 pontiac sunfire wont start just keeps turning over light on dash board that looks like a lock keeps coming on don't know what this is. Fuel pump is working.

on a similar problem i had occured it is the theft lock that GM uses. You have to put the key in the ignition turn to ACC wait ten minutes and turn it off. You MUST do this three times and then the theft lock will turn off. Once that is out of the way it SHOULD start.

hi , not necessarily , did you replace the key and tumbler , or the ignition switch (electrical part) ? there is a password relearn procedure , attempt to start the vehicle , leave ignition on until THEFT SYSTEM indicator turns off , (approximetly 10 minutes) , turn ignition switch off , attempt to start vehicle , if vehicle starts , password has been learned ... if password does not relearn , i can post some diagnostic procedures .
