Question about 2003 Mazda MPV

2003 Mazda MPV trouble codes

My MPV does not idle properly. It seems to be related to a moisture problem. It happens primarily in the morning when the car is cold. I read the fault codes and got the following: 1) P0442 - EVAP Emission Control System Leak (small), 2) P0441 - EVAP Emission Control System Purge FLow Fault, 3) P0456 - EVAP Emission Control System leak very small, 4) P0505 - Idle control system malfunction. I'm hoping these are all related to the same problem. Any ideas?

Check the pcv hose at the back of the intake manifold it often leaks and will cause several idle problems

I have a Mazda MPV 2003, i bought from japan, 7 months ago, this van was running well until two days ago, it stsrts and cut off, starts again and while driving it is losing power then it will speed up

Before any diagnostics, I would run a tank of gas with a bottle of fuel dryer and injector cleaner to ensure that the engine racing isn't resulting from moisture and clogged injectors.

My Mazda MPV randomly begins to "chug" and act like it will die at a stop. the check engine light comes on. Started about 6 months ago. Seems to happen more when it rains. If I tighten the gas cap it stops...

the gas cap and check engine light thing are related in terms of the EVAP system, or the evaporative emisions system. This is NOT where your surge, or "chug" is coming from. The surge could be coming from a Exhaust Gas Recurculation valve that is starting to bind or "hang up" a bit. DO you notice this happens more at lights, or when coming to a stop? if so it could be an idle air control vavle.

Idles too high

This is fairly normal on most cars. It is like the choke. When choked, the idle raises up to increase the internal temperature quicker. Also helps free friction of parts due to the cold. Idle is adjusted by the cars computer and o2 sensors.

2003 Mazda MPV codes P0102, 0108, 0113, 0421, 0431, 0505, 0507

The codes are mass air flow sensor, manifold pressure, intake air temp, catalytic converter.

The only thing I cant think of is that the manifold seals are defective and theres no back pressure which would explain the erradic idleing.

I don't have a solution to the problem, but Mazda should. I have replaced 3 different ignition coils in the last 3 months. I am spending more on repairs than I was in a car payment. Mazda has been no help at all!

Worsening shudder

Do a compression test on the cylinder and compare it to a cylinder on the other side. If the compession reads lower in #4 the chances of the head gasket leaking is pretty good. What's happening is #4 cylinder may be blowing air into the cylinder next to it. You will not have any water in the oil or visa versa if this is happening.
