1989 volvo 740 spark plug installation

well if your engine turns over but will not fire you may have a bad ignition coil so please locate it and check for voltage at small wires attached to the coil but DO NOT CHECK FOR VOLTAGE WHRE THE WIRE GOES FROM IT TO THE ENGINE.

below are the instructions on replacing the main pump. Make sure you're geting power to it to be sure that is your problem. Hope this helps.

How could you need a diagram for 3 simple wires?
There is only the large wire out to the starter that bolts on with a nut, the small wire plugged in from the dash, and a ground wire that has a nut bolting it to the shell.

The rotor cap (i am not sure if you meant distributor cap or rotor button, but ill answer them both) on a 1989 Volvo 740 is located directly at the back of the engine block, connected to the cam shaft. it is the orange plastic device that the spark plug wires snap into. the rotor button is the orange plastic part found inside of the distributor. to get to the rotor button you would have to remove the distributor with a 8 or 10mm wrench (sorry I cant remember which), there are 3 bolts to remove. it should take less then 5mins to do this. Try replacing your fuel pump relay,this controls this.The fuelpump relay is two relays in one unit.

I had the same problem with a 1989 Volvo 740 GLE station wagon. I did the same thing you did. But this time I talked to the local Independent Volvo service shop, not the dealer. The problem turn out to a bad fuel pump in the gas tank. You can replace it from inside the back of the station wagon. Just remove the floor panel to access the top of the fuel tank. But before you do; note that there are two fuel pumps, one inline underneath the car on the drivers side, and the one inside the gas tank. Before, you replace any of the fuel pumps check the fuel pump relay behind the astray on the left side. It could also be a bad relay.

Fuel pump is located on drivers side below rear driver door area near rear axle. Fuel filter is located next to pump.

a new engine most likely, was it overheated?
