I'm guessing you have a automatic trans? if it is a 4x4 make sure you are in 2wd or 4x4 all the way if so you need a trans shop it won't be an easy fix

4x4 K1500 Chevy Truck, 4 wheel drive repair instructions

There are a number of different hub systems so this may not work but it has worked for me on both auto and manual locking hubs. On a flat surface without traffic. Put the trans into neutral, shift the transfer case into 4x4, shift the trans into reverse and back the truck up 15-20 feet. Completely stop and shift trans into drive. See if this has locked the hubs in. If not, you can also try following the same instructions except shifting into 4wd low. Sometimes the hubs need a "bump" to get them to slip into place. Keep In mind that if the 4 wd low select works, you need to shift it back into 4 wd high before continuing! When taking the truck out of 4wd to 2wd, I recommend the same, shift to neutral, select 2wd, back truck up, shift back to drive and check. Its entirely possible that your hubs need maintenance (they're often overlooked) but hopefully this will get you going. Please let me know if thus worked or if I can offer other suggestions. Good luck!

The vacuum shift motor ( actually a diaphragm ) is a vacuum to move the lever one direction ( i.e. 4WD ) and then vacuum to move the other direction ( i.e. back into 2WD ).

You can shift into 2WD and remove the vacuum lines and plug them to remove this, if you think the vacuum shift solenoids are getting ground from another source and shifting the front axle, or just unplug the connector on the shift solenoids. The GEM activates the Shift solenoids by applying ground to them.

I would have to agree with papa_11069 that the problem is in the front u-joints.

In 2WD but 4x4 light on also front axels and hubs stay engaged

youve probably have got a bad hub. with an open front differintial it will spin the tires in the air but not when torgue is applied.

The part time light is on

start car put it in neutral shift 4x4 lever into 4x4 low then drive a few feet. now shift main trans back to neutral then move 4x4 shifter back to 2wd high for normal driving then shift in drive and drive for a few min light should turn off..if nor disconnect battery for 15 min to reset computer and see if that does it. if that doesnt work you may need 4x4 linkage adjusted you have a lift?
