I have the same problem and ended up breaking it about a week ago. I'm going to call Mazda today and have them get the replacement part.

Just broke my second one and bought the car in August 2008.

gas cap is stuck - broke it when trying to take it out - Probably a poor design issue.

Me too, 2009 Mazda 3, the gas cap broke, leaving the threaded part in the car. Garbage, now the dealership is trying to charge me $75 to get a replacement? BS!

went to fill up my mazda3, for the first time, it's a month old....could not get the cap off...thought I did not have my Wheaties...but it's an model issue.

dealer closed until tomorrow... Can it be fixed without substantilal downtime??

Purchased new 08 Mazda 3 hatchback. Gas cap stuck on 4th tank. Dealership says known problem. Say replacements covered by warranty. They say all replacements are different cap that is supposed to resolve issue. But said new cap can also get stuck. Ridiculous. If have to tow car whenever out of gas, car is a lemon. Will probably get custom gas cap.

The problem is that the cap gets cross-threaded. From my problem and what I have seen in so many forums, it may be that the filler opening may get damaged when this happens, allowing it to occur more easily the next time.

It's a real problem, because if you don't tighten the cap enough, the Check Engine Light comes on and doesn't go away by itself for a LONG time. So you have to tighten it as much as possible to avoid the CEL but you must tighten it as loosely as possible to avoid getting it stuck.

I wonder if Mazda is really going into the replacement gas cap business ;-)

just bought an 09, cap stuck on 2nd fill up, i spent 5 min or so standing in the cold trying to get my cap off, lucky I wasn't on empty so I gave up, im getting ready to call the dealer now

I have a mazda 5 and have gone through two gas caps in less than a year. My wife and I have owned four cars and have NEVER misaligned or cross threaded our gas caps before until we owned our current car. This is definitely a design flaw and should be fixed by mazda.

2009 mazda 3 hatchback. i have the same problem, gas cap got stuck so many times and just like that it broke. called dealer 35 dollars to get a new one. im going to see about warrenty

where is the emergency outer gas cap release switch?

  • Anonymous Apr 22, 2009

I have a 2008 Mazda 5 and the first time I tried to fill it up I had trouble taking off the gas cap--I couldn't have mis-aligned it. this past weekend it stuck on and had to take it to Mazda to have it replaced. Of course they said it was my inability to put the cap on properly. Why is it the first of my 17 cars I have owned that I am not able to get the gas cap on correctly, DUH!!

  • jasonkidd Apr 26, 2009

I have a 2006 Mazda 3 and definitely had the same issue. The first time it happened, I tried for about 10 minutes and finally got if off. The 2nd time, I wasn't so lucky and I had to ply it off with a pair of pliers. How inconvenient.

I have an 08 Mazda 3. After one month the gas cap broke. The check engine light has come on 8 times since, and every time the dealer explains how I am incapable of aligning and tightening the cap properly. Its amazing I was able to get by the last 30 years and 400,000 miles on 9 different cars not knowing how to align and close a gas cap! Mazda needs to step up and design a gas cap that works properly. Is there anyway to cancel the check engine light easily?

Gas cap broke when using it just as I do on every other car. Definitely a defective design. It's a shame the replacement caps aren't in the local car parts stores yet... This is a lousy way for Mazda to make aftermarket sales.

Same problem here. 4 times. this time the top of the cap broke off also. Using a large channel lock plier, simply give it a slight clockwise turn first. It should free up then using your fingers take the inner cap off. It is easier to see how it is supposed to work without the top of the cap on it. This will at least get you able to fuel up again and you can use it like that for however many times you need too until you get a new one. The filler tube is notched out in two places so line up the tabs on the cap with the notches in the tube and it should go off and on easily, by hand. Hope this can help you all out. Worked for me! Good Luck!

Mazda3 5-dr gas cap stuck

this is a very large problem with the gas caps on the threes. take the cap to the dealer and have them replaced the fuel filler pipe and the gas cap that is the only way to fix the problem. if you just replace the gas cap it will happen again.

Stuck gas cap

this is a very rare problem, it is caused by the large sealing O ring sticking. all car and trucks use this same cap developed by stant inductries.

Mazda mx 3 1992 not start

Check for possible vacuum leak, maybe a hose off or partially broken. Make sure your firing order is correct when reconnecting those wires to the new cap.

there are 2 vaccum hoses going into the intake. the larger one on top has a spring clip holding it and if you look under that you'll see a smaller one with a check valve. mine was disconnected. plugs in under the larger one.
