Question about 2000 Chevrolet Tracker

Car dies spontaneously

My 2000 Chevy tracker dies spontaneously when idle at a stop light, drive through, etc. I let it rest for about 5 minutes then no problem it starts right up and drives only to do the same thing - maybe within days or hours later.

The tracker has been in repair more than a dozen times. The engine reading reads "nothing wrong with the engine." I've change just about everything the repair shops can think of, but still the problem still exists. Amongst the items of repair included the main computer brain of the car which was very costly and yet the problem still exists. Otherwise the car is in good condition, but I can't rely on a car that may or may not die when carpooling to work or school activities.

Recently, the focus has been on the gas area/process of the car. The gas tank was found clean of debris and the filter and fuel pump was changed. The problem still exists after this change as well. Can you please help me find a's very tight, but I need my car. Your help will be so much appreciated!

My email is
I have a 2000 Chevy Tracker that dies spontaneously at idle. Whether at a red light or other stopping place it will eventually die if left idling. After about 5 minutes it will restart. All measurements are according to manuels. The computer indicates nothing wrong. Fuel pump was replaced with not improvement.

When engine dies the fuel pressure stays normal and spark is normal. We have applied pressure guages and watched the fuel presure while it quits. It stays normal. We replaced the fuel pump thinking that it might possible be sucking some air into the line. This made no difference.

My mechanic has checked all of this to no avail. Help!

The issue on my car and on the man from Hawaii has not been solved. On my car the injectors are working normally. We have found that during the down time (when it will not crank) the timing retards irratically. We have tried to replace the crank sensor but we cannot find the crank sensor. Do you have more suggestions and do you know where the crank sensor is located. Is it located in the bell housing?

Check the intake manifold gasket.

Remove completely the air filter and see if the engine stays on, if it does not die, then the problem was the air intake, or the air filter.

Problems of this kind, with the intake manifold gasket, and the air filter are often not reported as an error code doing a computer scan.

do you loose spark or fuel?

so with spark and fuel not changing . and it only does it at an idle. im thinking your egr valve is sticking open. but with it sticking open if you push to gas half way to the floor it should start right up after clearing the cylinders.
anything out of the normal in the fuel system would set a code. so im not looking at any sensors that would stop the signal to the injector.
if the egr stuck it should set a code PO400
    but not always.
can you tell when its about to die?
doest it just shut off or does it drop below normal idle ?
and im sure you have checked the pcv.
have you check the ohms on the fuel injector cold and then hot?
if the injector has a low impedance it could be overheating the driver and shuting it down at idle.
this could be why it doesnt start right back up. needs to cool down.
let me know how this works out for you

to ge to the bottom of this a person need to find out if you are loosing injector pulse ..
has you mechanic experanced this problem?
in my shop we would install a fuel pressure guage and run wires to the injectors to watch injector pluse and a vacuum gauge and watch to see which one goes away.

i had one gm car that we chased a stalling problem for a week and found a bad ignition pickup.
    later paul

This is caused by one of the things you already replaced , including the A/C compressor and power steering pump. Or it could be from a wrong size or over stretched belt.

1999 Chevrolet Tracker low idle problem when cold

Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls and low idle rough idle, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve (IAC for short), they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

Runs fine at startup, after warming up it dies at low speed 5-10

Fuel pump? That is odd, it seems there is no issue with getting fuel. I would check the idle and the choke settings. Try tweaking those a bit.

Flickering lights on 2001 Chevy tracker

I had similar problems, with dash board lights and headlights flickering, and the problem was a dying alternator. After I changed it, everything got back in normal. Also, a bad alternator eventually will kill your car's battery, too. I hope this will help you.

Car dies spontaneously

i had one of these problem childs in my shop after hours of no problem . finnaly it died at the repair shop this problem was related directly to heat and with a scann tool i could see erratic crank reference . let it sit for 5 or so min it fired right back up . this is the ticket when the problem happens lay on the gas while turning it over if you hear it poping out the intake or out out the exhaust like spark is at the wrong time you have your answer. on these motors the injector pulse is responsibility of cam sensor and spark is the cranksensors duo.

2000 beetle will die at random times, and will not start for about 15 minutes!

this can be caused by a bad fuel filter or dirty injectors. try a bottle of fuel injector or fuel system cleaner in a tank of gas. i suggest lucas products which can be found at any parts store.
