Question about 1995 Oldsmobile Ninety Eight

Car won't start

My wife's 1995 Olds 98 is getting us very frustrated, and broke. It periodically doesn't start. We've had a new battery put in, a new starter, a new ignition switch, disconnected the power antenna, and other things that I probably can't think of right now at the suggestions of various mechanics.
Is there anything that we are missing, or that these cars are prone to have problems with that could be the cause?

Right, it acts like a power problem. The engine doesn't even attempt to turn over.

(But there are interior lights and door beeps when open)

Something appears to be draining the battery, because it starts with a jump or after only a few minutes on the charger. But it's real intermitent, as it can set for a few days and start. And only set overnight and not start.?? I will try both of your suggestions, and check back for others. Thanks!

when you tell us it doesnt start
    this could mean
    the engine doesnt turn over
    or
the engine turns over but doesnt start.
just from reading your question i would guess from what you have replace the engine doesnt turn over???

There is a switch for letting the engine only start in park or netural .
this could be your problem.
this would be the first place i would check.
put the car in netural and give it a try.
good luck

That is easy to track down, ok full charged battery, then connect an inductive pickup ammeter that can read milliamps around the positive battery cable make sure all lights and doors are closed and read the drain on the system anything more that .003 amperes is excessive remember that the PCM has a KEEP ALIVE MEMORY and that cannot be shut off so don't worry about that it's so slight that you won't see it.
if you see a drain start unplugging fuses one at a time and lay them out so you know where they came from, keep goin until you get a drop on the reading and that is the circuit that is draining current.
How long does it take do drain a full charged battery? If you have questions call me 253-691-6206

Ok Great thanks for getting back to me, Yes use an amp meter to find out if there is infact a drain on the system, ampclamps are inexpensive, and good for this thing, I used to use mine all the time. about 1.4-1/2 amp is the limit ok good luck. Keep in touch with me at fixincars@yahoo.com

I removed the battery and now the car won't start

'I disconnected the car battery/changed the car battery and now my car won't start'

Another common question on Fixya.
You've done nothing wrong. It's simply that the immobiliser doesn't recognise the key.

Put the key into the ignition. Turn the ignition on. Press the LOCK button twice on your remote. Wait 1 minute.

Turn the ignition off and press the UNLOCK button on the remote a couple of times. This will disarm the immobiliser.

The key should be recognised and your vehicle will start.

98 honda crv wil start if jump started and then later won't start

Your battery is not fully charged and may not be accepting a full charge. Remove your battery and put it on a charger overnight. Take the battery to a parts store and have them hook it up. They will then be able to tell if it is taking a full charge or not. If this is a new battery it will take a full charge but it is still getting drained by something such as a radio not shutting off automatically, if you have that option.

1972 olds 98 455ci starts and runs fine when its cold but once i've driven it for awhile it starts sputtering like its running out of gas

sounds like a vapor lock. older cars needed a set of points . they kept firing times in sync with fuel delivery , valves opening/closing try that.

"2003 Chevy Impala won't start". Car would not

The alternator is not charging,or the battery wont take a charge. If all accessories work fine when its running after you've boosted it,its likely the battery.

My wife has just rung me to say the car "died" as

Hey there. Still trying to get use to this new account. Your hot side battery wires, one leads to the alternator and the other leads straight to the starter motor. It is located on the bottom front of the engine. Make sure you disconnect the battery first. Before you change it, make sure the ground wire is grounded. It may be the issue. If it is, replace the starter motor.

I just put a new battery in my car and got the alternator checked but my battery is still getting drained, whats going on

Do you mean the battery is draining overnight, and needs jump started? On your Olds, if this is the case...the starter has to be draining the battery...most likely a short...is it the original starter? Changing the starter on your Olds is not a big deal...:) Nice Car, if your Cutlass has gauges...(including Volts/Battery) the signal should show...toward charge when driving...The starter short is hard to confirm.

1995 Olds 98 had oil pan gasket replaced. Oil lite came on,

The oil pump broke down or the oil pickup was blocked not feeding oil to the engin. The bad news, the engin is probely ceised and will cost a lot of money to repair, if it is repaireble.Alternetive is to replace the engin. Could be cheaper than repair.
