Question about 2000 Volkswagen Passat 4Motion

1 Answer

What is the fan or vacuum called that's located in the very front left area under the hood?

I have a 2000 Passat with the 1.8T and lately there is a fan or some sort of vacuum that continues to run after I shut off the car.  It continues running until the battery is completely drained.  I'm assuming its some sort of blower fan to cool the car, but it will not shut off.  I can hear it running in the very front left area when looking at the car from the front.  If you guys know what might be causing that noise, and how I can solve the problem that would be really awesome.  Thanks

I had this same problem when I first bought my 2000 Passat, It happened several times and ran the battery completely down. I had it looked at several times with no solution. I had to replace the battery eventually from it being run down so much. But since the battery change it has not happened again.

Thanks for your response on the switch/solenoid hard to get to? Is the part expensive? I'd like to do this myself since my Passat is having the same problem.

Mine did the same. I eventually found the problem to be the secondary fan, which heats up the intake air when the car is cold to make it start up better. there is a switch/solenoid attached to the fan unit that goes bad and needs to be changed.
