Question about 1996 Honda Civic

TIming belt I cannot get the nut loose on the crank shaft. Is it one of those that is left hand threaded? We have been using a torque gun and nothing.

Yes, it' left hand threads, because it's an import, most imports are left hand. Also you need about a 140 psi to break it loose. Hope this is helpful. Please rate. Thanks.

Trying to change belt. Bolt will not come loose. Afraid of stripping. Does this remove by cranking to the right instead of left as is most common? Used extreme pressure and it does not break loose.

Some nuts are left hand thread, and is depending on the direction of travel of the revolving part it is fitted to. The direction of travel will always tighten the nut. Spray with WD40 and try turning clockwise.

660 has any body had problems with the sheaves nut keeps backing off I put red locker thread tight on it and it still backs off at a hundred and five and the torque wrenchand I have no cluethe cubic inch...

right hand nuts that keep undoing on a shaft that is rotating clockwise will always undo
There is a physics law that covers it
Trucks use left hand threads on the left hand side so that the wheels do not come loose
so how to overcome this problem
try using a nylock nut or a new spring washer with sharp edges that dig into the nut and the base
when tensioned drill a hole through the nut and tap in a roll pin
you can get roll pins less than 1/8 in diameter and that would prevent the nut from undoing
to remove the nut ,tap out the pin first
The real fix would be to get a shaft with a left hand thread made by an engineering shop, then the action would make the nut tighter

it will be a normal RH thread. For easy removal use a 1/2 drive rattle gun and you will not have to try and hold the crank while you are undoing the bolt.

To start with this engine is an interference fit so ensure that the no 1 piston is on TDC and all the marks line up as you cannot move the crank or cam shaft after you take the belt off.. The m12 bolt Crank shaft bolt will be tensioned to 85 ft /lbs so I suggest a 1/2 inch impact gun will be what you need . It is a standard thread just very tight

It's a bolt, and if left hand threads, it will be the first time I have heard of such. No pin would be through the threads. Try the breaker bar or impact gun the other way. If engine tries to turn, pull the starter and wedge a block of wood against the ring gear teeth on the flywheel.
Don't know about sables, but thought all crank bolts were regular threads.

  • Chain wrench
  • 3/8 inch drive ratchet
  • 1/2 inch drive ratchet
  • 10 mm wrench
  • 12 mm wrench
  • 10 mm socket (3/8 inch)
  • 14 mm socket (3/8 inch)
  • 17 mm socket (1/2 inch)
  • 19 mm socket (1/2 inch)
  • Timing belt
  • Balancer belt
  • Bottle of Liquid Paper

  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal. Using a ½-inch-drive ratchet and the 19 mm socket, turn the center bolt on the crankshaft so that number-one cylinder piston is at top dead center (TDC). You will know you ware at TDC when the mark on the crank is in alignment with the arrow on the timing cover.
  • Disconnect the cruise control connector and remove the cruise control actuator. Loosen the upper mounting bolt with the 14 mm socket. Use a 12 mm socket to loosen the lower nut then use a 10 mm socket to loosen the adjuster from the power steering pump and remove the belt.
  • Loosen the upper air conditioner mounting bolt using the 14 mm socket. Use the 12 mm socket to loosen the lower nut and adjusting bolt on the alternator and remove the alternator/AC belt. Remove the valve cover using a 10 mm socket.
  • Place the jack behind the left front wheel where the arrow is located indicating the jack location, and raise the vehicle. Put the jack stand under the subframe behind the jack, then lower the jack. Remove the left front wheel for easy access to the crank pulley. Using a block of wood atop the jack, place the jack under the oil pan and lift with slight pressure to hold the engine in place. Remove the side engine mount using a 17 mm deep socket.
  • Take off the dipstick, pipe tube and upper timing cover using a 10 mm socket.
    Then remove the timing belt adjuster rubber seal without loosening the adjuster nut. Take off the crankshaft pulley bolt. Use the chain wrench to hold the the crankshaft pulley while turning the crankshaft pulley bolt with a 19 mm socket. Use the 10 mm wrench and 10 mm socket to remove the bolts on the lower cover. Remove the lower cover and mark the location of the cam, crank and balancer shaft with Liquid Paper. Remove the balancer shaft belt and timing belt. Install the timing belt and the balancer shaft belt in the reverse order of removing them. During Installation of the crank pulley, coat the threads of the crank pulley bolt with engine oil and tighten it to 159 foot-pounds. Finally, adjust the tension of the power steering and alternator belts as well.

    I'm having difficulty removing the bolt in the crank shaft pully. Is it a left or right hand thread?

    It is a right hand thread, it is RARELY a left hand thread, to avoid confusion and costly the last resort, you may have to borrow and use and air rattle gun, that not only loosens it, but also shocks the bolt to be removed (shockwave) some people who do install this bolt use loctite threadlocker of some description rather than torquing it up to correct amount ONLY

    I cant get the bolt loose to remove pulleys from the front of crank shaft.Ineed to replace crank shaft seal.

    easy , you must learn to improvise ,use a nice knuckle bar ,preferably snap on then jam this in the suspension with the socket on the nut and turn starter motor .it will come undone with no problem.most important do not forget to put some locktite on thread when re fitting,also make sure you put some white paint marks on the pulleys to the bloc so you know where they time up do not paint teh belt because you WILL change it and paint teh milage on teh timing cover and date for anyone else to know when it was done last

    Trying to remove crankshaft hub in order to change timing belt. I'm thinking its reverse thread but it needs to be kept from turning the belt in the process. Any ideas? 94 Ford Ranger

    The bolt is a normal, right hand thread, and it is tough to keep the engine from turning while you brake it loose. There are several methods, but I have used a chain wrench on the hub, and I protect the hub with an old section of belt,

    1992 Volvo 740 Wagon w/o Turbo: Timing Belt Needs Replaced

    It is a right hand thread and you usually need an impact gun. Take the fan out of the way, to give you more room, I have found that helps.
