Question about 1996 Dodge Caravan

1996 Plymouth Grand Voyager

Wipers only work after depressing wash button. I have replaced the multifunction switch and still have the same problem. If I have wipers on low, push the wash button, they work for two rotations at low, If I have them on high, push the wash button, they work for two rotations at high, then stop. Any ideas............?

Thanks but I have replaced all relays and fuses.

I had the same problem with mine PLUS my power door locks and some guages were not working. Replaced my Body Control Module (BCM) and problem instantly fixed. Bought it from a salvage just making sure it was the same part number. New from Dodge was $1000. After replacing, no problems other than I now have a different odometer reading. Remember to disconnect battery when working on BCM

Thanks for all the feedback! To the last response, there was no whining noise when the wipers were working. I have been busy with other projects and will replace the bcm and will let you know if that works. As I stated in first post, wipers just quit working unless I pressed the washer button and then they would come on enough to wipe rain off if it wasnt too bad. I replaced all fuses and relays under dash and in engine compartment, replaced the wiper/turn signal switch, and still had same problem....looks like from recommendations, its the bcm and will replace that when I have the time and just want to thank all for the input.

Same problem with my '95 Grand Voyager- dealer mechanic said harness short to ground blew out the BCM, they charged $525.00 for a rebuilt one, plus another $400.00 labor diagnosing and repairing the harness....

Has there been a whining sound when the wipers did engage?

I had the exact same problem PLUS my power door locks and some guages stopped working. I replaced the Body Control Module (BCM) which is behind the inside fuse box and problem was fixed. I did get the part from a salvage as the unit from Dodge was $1000. Make sure you replace with same part number and disconnect battery before working on it. One downfall of changing BCM is I now have a new odometer reading.

If is the BCM, I found this infomation on another website.

The BCM provides the following features:
    • Automatic door locks
    • Battery protection
    • Chimes
    • Compass/mini-trip support
    • Courtesy lamps
    • BCM diagnostic support
    • Door lock inhibit
    • Headlamp time delay
    • Ignition key lamp
    • Illuminated entry
    • Instrument panel dimming
    • Mechanical instrument cluster support
    • Power door locks (with/without remote keyless entry)
    • Sliding door memory lock
    • Vehicle Theft Security system (VTSS)
    • Windshield wipers / washers (front and rear)

When mine went it caused odometer, fuel guage, power door locks and windshield wipers (except they worked when wash was pushed) to all stop working. I replaced it with and everything was good again. You need to replace with one from a van that has similar options from what I understand if you do not get a new part - they are expensive new i.e. $1000.00.

I did find these instructions on how to replace. I got mine from salvage making sure it was the same part number. Changing the BCM will cause your odometer to change to whatever reading the BCM came from.

It's not too difficult to replace the Body Control Module. If you know what you are doing you can do it in about 2 hours or less on a 1996 Caravan. The BCM is mounted on the back of the fuse box under the dash on the driver's side.
    1. Disconnect the battery.
    2. Remove the under-dash panel (plastic cover panel, metal panel, and metal brace.) You will also need to disconnect the handle for the emergency brake.
    3. Remove three large screws holding fuse box in place (two on right and one on left.)
    4. Remove the electrical connections at the bottom of the BCM. Avoid breaking the plastic retaining clips if possible. To release the clips push in at the tip.
    5. You should now be able to pull the fuse box down a few inches, which is all you need.
    6. Remove the screws holding the BCM to the fuse box, two screws on the right and one on the left.
    7. Slide the BCM down and out to remove it from the back of the fuse box.
Reverse the procedure to put the new BCM in place. If you broke the retaining clips on the connectors you will need to use duct tape to hold them in place.

No power at relay... fuse is good.... can jump power to relay prongs 87 & 87a to make wipers work... relay prong 86 is dead,no power or ground jump power to that prong with relay in & it trips but...

The current flow is controlled by the multifunction switch on the steering column. If the problem is in the electronic parts, wiring, switch (except the integral motor park switch) and wiper motor a DTC will be stored in the BCM. You will need a DRB scan tool. Check with some auto part stores, some stores will do scans for free.
