Im not sure what year your truck is but fords have a starter solonoid on the passenger fender and that is where you need to start to do voltage checks.

WHAT CONDITION ARE YOUR BATTERY CABLES ? THEY MAY SEEM OK, BUT SOMETIMES REPLACEMENT IS NECESSARY ! BATTERY TERMINALS MUST BE CLEANED, SMEAR SOME VASOLINE ON TERMINALS BEFORE MOUNTING THEM, BESURE TERMINALS ARE TIGHT !!! THE (NEGATIVE) CABLE OR GROUND IS VERY IMPORTANT ! A GOOD CONNECTION IS PARAMOUNT !!! INSPECT STARTER/SOLONOID CONNECTIONS, THEY MUST BE CLEAN, PROPERLY CONNECTED , TIGHT !!! TIGHT IS TIGHT, TOO TIGHT IS BROKE !!! MAKE SURE BATTERY IS IN GOOD,CLEAN CONDITION, FULLY CHARGED !!! YOU DID REPLACE THE STARTER WITH A NEW SOLONOID I HOPE ! ITS THIS ELECTRO-MAGNET THAT INGAGES THE STARTER INTO THE FLYWHEEL TO CRANK THE ENGINE . THEY WORK TOGETHER ! TAPPING ON THE STARTER TELLS ME, POSSIBLE LOOSE CONNECTION, EITHER INSIDE OR OUTSIDE SOLONOID . ALTERNATOR PROBLEM ? TAKE TO AUTOPARTS STORE, HAVE THEM CHECK BOTH THE BATTERY & ALTERNATOR . ITS FREE ! CHECK THE ALTERNATOR BELT FOR WEAR, WHETHER ITS TIGHT, LOOSE, ETC., A WORN OR LOOSE BELT WILL SLIP, NOT ALLOWING THE ALTERNATOR TO DO ITS JOB, CHARGING THE BATTERY !!! ONE MORE THING, ITS IMPORTANT TO KEEP THE ENGINE TUNED-UP, ESPECIALLY BOTH AIR & FUEL FILTERS, SPARK PLUGS & PLUG WIRES SHOULD BE REPLACED AS WELL, THEY DO WEAR OUT !!! DISTRIBUTOR CAP & ROTOR NEED ATTENTION ALSO, REPLACE THEM ! BACK TOO YOUR SRARTER/SOLONOID, SOMETIMES EVEN NEW ELECTRICAL PARTS GO BAD, IT HAPPENS ALOT, THEY COME FROM MEXICO, CHINA, ETC., NEED I SAY MORE ???

When i try starting the car it does a clicking sound and i keep trying till it strartes ,, would that sound like the starter going or not ?

hi the clicking sound is probably the solenoid switch on your starter motor not fully actuating
this can be because it is worn or because there isnt enough battery power to open the switch
check the condition of your battery and all conections to it and the starter motor clean off any corrosion with abrasive paper to ensure a good connection if the battery is in good condition
and the connections are good you need to get a new starter motor or find someone who can recondition your old one

I tried to start my 2004 grand cherokee and there was nothing not even clicking dash lit up and guages were bouncing back and forth hooked a battery starter to it and it started then shut off right away...

This sounds strongly like a faulty battery or connection. Verify that the connections are tight and clean. No corrosion. If there is any corrosion it can cause exactly this. If everything is clean, have the battery and charging system tested(the alternator, once the engine is runing). Let me know.

if the starter is clicking, try tapping on it with a hard piece of wood, like that of a hammer handle, while someone tries to start the car. if it starts, replace the starter. also make sure electrcal connectins on the starter are tight and clean. and check the starter relay if applicable

Truck sat for 6 weeks battery went dead. Charged

If checking battery cables and wiring to the starter and ground points doesn't help. Have the battery checked for a bad cell. Preferably before you charge it.

Just changed the stater, however, it will only click when i turn the key, any suggestions

In order to have the starter work, the solenoid has to close the positive connection to the starter. The solenoid now is corroded inside, when it click to engage the contact inside, but the contact is not good to conduct the current to the starter. Therefore your starter is not turning. Need to replace the solenoid. it is on top of your starter. Here is the image. 5cc5b1b.jpg

hi I'm litoshop if your only getting a click then you may have one or two problems check starter relay in power distributor center the first relay is the starters if that's ok then the solenoid on the starter my be bad or the carbon brushes in the starter try tapping the starter with a hammer lite taps and try to start if it starts then it's the carbon brushes in side the starter good luck if this information has been useful please let us know thank you.
