Question about 2003 Mitsubishi Galant

1 Answer

Mitsubishi galant stopped while driving and all transmission fluid spilled out

My son has a 2003 mitsubishi galant, he isn't the best driver in the world and has been in more than one accident with this car. His story (and the friend with him agrees) was, while driving approx. 40miles an hour the engine suddenly lost all power and all the transmission fluid spilled out onto the street. His friend suggested maybe the "plug" had finally just "melted" away because he recently had radiator problems and overheating. ???? Help

Sounds like his transmission just died. On most cars whan the transmission goes, components inside fail and the car quits moving. But on some vehicles the transmission literally self destructs and blows a hole through the transmission housing, leaving a puddle of transmission fluid like you described. I've seen it before on Chystler products but not Mitsubishis, but from what you've described it sounds the very same.

Transmission fluid automatic

there should be a drain plug located on the bottom of your transmission you need to remove the plug make sure to have a container directly under it so it does not spill on the ground when its done draining put the plug back in and refill to the proper level specified in your owners manual ( note the plug will be a bolt you just unscrew it with a socket and ratchet set)

Does my 2003 mitsubishi galant have a transmission filter if so where is it located

All automatic transmissions have a filter, which is located inside the transmission pan. To replace filter, you will need to remove the transmission pan. Before replacing pan be sure to remove any old gasket that may still be present on pan and the mount on transmission. Refill with proper type and amount of fluid...DO NOT OVERFILL

It could also be a problem in the power brake booster valve too (It could be many different things, however tranny fluid is not on my list).. Is the tachometer surging or dropping as well more than 200-300 rpm? How many miles are on the car and or the tranny fluid?

Transmission delayed engagement at cold start

Depending on how Cold it is where you are, The cold will effect the Operation of the Tranny. I am pretty sure that your Tranny is Fine, Just Really Cold. Depending also on where you live, I use Valvoline Quick Change to service my Vehicles when I am on the Road. Have never had a Problem with them. On the Fluid, They make so many Different Kinds now adays that it is hard to Choose. Look in the Back of your Owners Manual and Use what is Suggested in there.
