Question about 1985 Toyota Corolla 2 Door

1985 Toyota Corolla Intermittently runs rough-no power

1985 toyota corolla-one day all of a sudden started running rough intermittently. It will run great with lots of power one minute then runs rough with no power the next. When you are driving or just sitting still it will do this. When you push on the gas pedal it will shudder. I have cleaned the carb, put on a new fuel pump, checked all lines for vacuum leaks. It is a crazy thing. I just can not put my finger on the problem. Spent numerous hours under hood to no avail. Please help. Does not matter if it is cold or warm does it intermittently all the time.

Thanks Toyota Ed but are you referring to the egr valve? If not where would the two primary and secondary vacuum diaphram cover be?

Try this: Remove the two (primary & secondary) vacuum diaphram covers & inspect the vacuum diaphrams. If there is any evidence of distortion at the diaphrams, expect to get the condition that you are describing.

The vacuum diaphrams are circular things that bolt to the side of the carb; 1 is large, and one is smaller. The main problem (primary) diaphram would normally be found on the passenger side of the carb. Most likely 3 screws hold it to the side of the carb. he housing is approx 1-1.5" diameter.

Very common problem, the diaphrams age, age get brittle/hard, & leak fuel.

My 97 Toyota corolla will not stay running after going through deep water. Most of the engine compartment was briefly submerge. It starts but runs rough and dies if I try put it in drive and try to...

Possible exhaust restriction.
Could be cat converter.
You can try and unhook the exhaust system and try it.
If the car will run a few minutes try a vacum guage hooked up to engine vacuum.
If you get a very low reading that would be your answer.

Pull the spark plug wires out one by one and check for oil on wire. Sometimes the valve cover spark plug hole gaskets leak oil into the spark plug hole and causes a misfire. If oil found clean with brake or carb cleaner and blow out with compressed air. also when car runs bad listen under hood for snapping noise this would be spark escaping to ground somewere. In a dark garage you might be able to see the spark.
