possibly air in the system. run the car with the radiator cap off and keep it full allowing all bubbles to come out. look around for any bleed ports in the cooling lines or the thermostat housing and open them with engine running to release air.

If both heater hoses are hot but only warm air is produced it is unlikely an airlock is the problem and almost certain the cooling system flush has not been effective.
In that case ideally the heater matrix should be replaced or dismantled and cleaned but it is possible a different type of flushing would be more effective.

It is a kill or cure method but an air and water flush can reach the parts other types of flush can't reach. The heater is disconnected and water run through it until full and then compressed air is blown into it which causes a violent reaction and everyone gets wet. The process is repeated several times in each direction.

It is very possible that there is air in the Heater hoses and it needs to be "Burped". With the engine COLD, remove the radiator cap and locate the Heater core hoses (there will be 2 hoses close together - In and a out). It is also possible the thermostat could be installed backwards.

sounds like a head gasket problem. A minor leak there will pump compression into coolant and force it out of heater core. Any unusual steaming from tail pipe? Also: if radiator was flushed "in car" sometimes debris does not come out. Try flushing with it out of the vehicle. Jeep radiators are notoriously small for their application if not at at least 90% they will not work correctly.I'd look at the hg first though otherwise, your symptoms seem to be contradictory.

SOURCE: 99 VW Beetle blows warm air when you start air conditioner

your condensor fins could be blocked by leaves or other debris on the outside. this component is located right behind the radiator. there could also be an overcharge or under charge in the system. make sure that when you charged the system that you used a good set of gauges to check the system pressures. Also check and make sure that there is not a blockage somewhere in the lines, Usually if there is there is a fine layer of ice surrounding it.

You hot air comes from the water circulated through the heater core. It is like a miniture radiator with water flowing thru it constantly. So by opening the "Blend Door" you are permitting so much of this hot air to pass thru.

Seems like for some reason your heater core is plugged up. Just like a radiator can be. So water may be passing through your heater core but not passing through fully. Your heater core gets hot from water passing throught it from the engine. Then your doors open up, in proportion to how much air is permitted to pass over the heater core.

Suggest to remove the heater core and replace it. Seems the blend doors are working properly but again, if you have a non working heater core then no air can pass over the "Hot Core" for you to recieve hot air.

If you are not mechanically inclined, then go to a local parts store and you can buy a car manual, such as Chilton's or Hane's Car manuals, for your year and make to show you how to replace it. Then you can also have it for any other problems that may arise.

I have a 2000 VW Beetle, the blue temperature light is on all the time, it is kangerooing with no acceleration when cold, nothing shows up on the code reader any ideas Laura

There are probably two coolant temp sensors--one for the dash display and one for the ECU to do fuel trim. Unlikely that both have failed at same time, but possible. First, insure coolant thermostat is not stuck open preventing normal warm up, then test or replace coolant temp sensor for the ECU.

2001 VW Beetle 2.0 heater won t heat up

If you flushed the coolant with the thermostat in, chances are you didn't flush the coolant. Regardless, it's easiest to check the controls inside first. Does the blower fan work? Does the air flow change from floor to vent, to dash as it's supposed to? Does the A/C change temps when knob is turned from cold to hot? Post results.

Walt,

Does you engine temp gauge register normal operating temp when the engine has ran for 10- 15 minutes? If so, your problem could be your heater control valve. If your engine temp is cold, then your problem is most likely your thermostat. Pls advise further what is going on.

Where is the the thermostat on a 2.0 , 2000 vw beetle ? Thank you

First time you might check the thermostat operating.

Heed of antifreeze coolant temperature!!!

The thermostat location for 2000 VW Beetle 2.0L is on back of the alternator at the bottom side of the bracket.

IMPORTANT NOTE: It is NOT necessary to replace the alternator if you want to change the thermostat !!!

Thermostat checking:
1. Cold engine. Start up the engine and watch of the water temp indicator. After first value 60 Celsius Degree you still warm up the engine until the lifter (pointer) reach 80 C deg. (second mark after 60 C deg.). At this time you let engine running at idle speed and check with your hand the thermostat plastic housing and hose temperature in bottom left side of the engine. Heed of alternator driving belt and ventilator fan !!!
2. If the thermostat is good the hose must be cold until the water temp indicator reach almost 90 C deg.
3. The thermostat opening temperature is 87 C deg.
4. If the hose is already warm the thermostat is out of order.

Thermostat location, Part number: 050 121 113 C, in german - "Kuehlregle".

Remark: 87 ... 102 Celsius deg.
Price around $35:

Important note: Always replace the thermostat seal, position 7 in the above picture.

Check to make sure that the rubber o-ring going into the heater core located under the hood on the passenger side does not need replaced. Also check the water pump, these are both very common problems with volkswagen.

Over heating

as stated, gotta be the thermostat... when the water reaches a certain temp this valve must open to allow coolant to flow thru the radiator or the water in the engine will get too hot and cause significant long term damage. It's good that you pull over immediately and let your engine cool off. A good emergency remedy to get the car to a safe place or a repair facility, is to run the heater at full blast. effectively using your heater core as a radiator. not ideal but will get a you a few more miles down the road.

OVER HEATING

In the fan circuit...You have a temp switch screwed on the radiator, a fuze and a relay in the fuze box plus a fan.  Swap the relay with another relay, replace the fuze.  The other fan should come on when the a/c is turned on.  If you fix the fans and it still overheats, you may have a BLOWN HEAD GASKET.  ALSO ARE YOU BLEEDING THE AIR FROM THE SYSTEM?  DO YOU SMELL EXHAUST IN THE COOLANT?
