Two possibilities here, First have the transmission fluid checked. You can do this yourself. with the car warmed up find the transmission dipstick, it's just like the oil dipstick, pull it out and wipe it off then reinsert it and pull it back out. at the bottom you will find the fluid level and a mark on the dipstick indicating where full is. If it is indeed full the your transmission bands are worn. The old fluid had enough "gunk" suspended in it to make it thicker and therefore you didn't get the "thunk" as it went into gear but now with new fluid you are hearing it.

Automatic transmission in my 06 Chevy Uplander slips when taking off from a stop and jerks into gear.

First thing is to check your trans fluid level. When checking it, do a inspection of the fluid. It should have a nice red color. If it looks brownish, and smells burnt, it needs to be changed. In addition, when was the last time the filter and trans fluid was changed? Over the years, the vecosity of the fluid breaks down, and causes the valves in the transmission to stick or get sluggish. One trick I had seen used BUT I am not recommending you use it, is to get about a pint or two of k-1 kerosene, and with the engine running, pour it in the transmission, and run it through the gears, and then drain the oil and replace the filter. The kerosene cleans valves and ports in the transmission.

Why does transmission jerks when shifting 2-3 gear

just as precaution, have you been changing the trans fluid as recommended. Start off simple, check the fluid level, change the fluid and filter if due. Read the owner's manual for how to check the fluid level. Check for any loose wiring connectors that go to the trans. IF this is no help. Get to a reputable trans shop.

Car jerks when changing gears

You do not say if it is an automatic or manual transmission (clutch). I will assume auto. This could be several things. It may be something as simple as low fluid or possibly the transmission filter needs to be changed and the old fluid flushed out. Or the transmission could be starting to go bad and would need to be rebuilt or replaced.

I have a 2004 Impala that transmission jerks into gears periodically when doing a bit of stopping and starting off. Have talked to other Impala owners, and some have had tranny problems also. It just...

This is common problems to the transmission when the fluid is getting to dirty and the transmission fluid and filter needs to be replaced. The transmission fluid and filter should be replaced every 45,000 miles to ensure there is no dirt causing the shift servos from binding. The other thing to is that when the transmission fluid get's to dirty, the fluid gets thicker. It retains fluid retention which can cause conflicts in the transmission sensors. What your experiencing is, your transmission is not shifting back to first gear and sticking in to 2nd gear. When you get on the gas peddle, the transmission sensors realize that it needs to be in 1st gear, so as the engine's RPM goes up and the transmission drops back to 1st, you get the jerking condition which will in turn cause you a $2,300.00 transmission replacement. For now when starting off from a stop, let the engine creep forward on it's own first to ensure that the transmission has shifted in to 1st gear. Then get on the gas peddle lightly till you have the transmission serviced. $100.00 transmission service is better then $2,300.00 transmission replacement. Good luck and do not have a transmission fluid flush, just filter and fluid replacement.
