Battery arcs replaced starter but battery arcs when connecting leads.

There are a few more things that could cause this .my first suggestion is do not hook up the battery till you can do so without it arcing first check like dr cool says and make sure you are not hooking it up backwards or wrong second you could have a grounded starter or a grounded starter cable also if your lights were left on and are still on or the heater is on you will get some arcing also make sure that you dont have a dead short in your wiring harness. any apliance that comonly has a large draw on power will cause arching if left on while hooking up the battery good luck i hope this helps ....

You could have put in a shorted starter, or

you could have put the big wire to the ground bolt instead of the bolt at the starter solenoid.

STARTER REPLACEMENT (ENGINE ELECTRICAL) Document ID# 688149 Starter Replacement

Removal Procedure

Important: This vehicle uses the PG260 F1 starter motor. The starter motor is serviced only as a complete unit.
  1. Disconnect the battery ground (negative) cable from the battery. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection.
  2. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.


  3. Remove the starter motor BAT terminal nut and electrical leads.
  4. Remove the starter motor S terminal nut and electrical lead.
  5. Remove the torque converter cover. Refer to Torque Converter Cover Replacement in Automatic Transaxle - 4T65-E.


  6. Remove the starter motor bolts.
  7. Remove the starter motor.

Installation Procedure



  1. Install the starter motor.
  2. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.
  3. Install the starter motor bolts.Tighten:
    Tighten the starter motor bolts to 47 [n-m] (35 lb ft).
  4. Install the torque converter cover. Refer to Torque Converter Cover Replacement in Automatic Transaxle - 4T65-E.


  5. Install the starter motor S terminal electrical lead and nut. Tighten:
    Tighten the starter motor solenoid S terminal nut to 3 [n-m] (27 lb in).
  6. Install the starter motor BAT terminal electrical leads and nut. Tighten:
    Tighten the starter motor solenoid BAT terminal nut to 10 [n-m] (89 lb in).
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8. Install the battery ground (negative) cable to the battery. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection.

Jump Start of Vehicle Battery


IF THE BATTERY YOU ARE USING TO JUMP-START THE VEHICLE HAS RECENTLY BEEN CHARGED IT MAY STILL BE GASSING, COVER THE VENT PLUGS OR COVERS WITH A DAMP CLOTH TO REDUCE THE RISK OF EXPLOSION SHOULD ARCING OCCUR WHEN CONNECTING THE JUMP LEADS.

Turn off all electrical ancillary circuits such as radio, lights, indicators etc. If the reason for a flat battery is unknown the condition may be as a result of an electrical short circuit, so care must be taken during the Jump-start process and subsequent to connection to ascertain if this is the case. A short circuit or un-isolated ancillary load can cause arcing when the jump leads are connected, a small 'crackle' is normal but any spark or flash is an indication of a problem that should be rectified before attempting to Jump-Start the vehicle.

Jaguar do not recommended that the vehicle is jump started, and If at all possible it is preferable to replace the flat battery with a suitable fully charged unit rather than jump-start the car. However if it is done it should be carried out by suitably qualified personel. Garage services and services like AA and RAC homestart should be used whenever possible.

Obviously there are occasions when carrying out this proceedure yourself is the only practical way proceed.

If there is no option but to jump-start the discharged battery should be removed and recharged immediately after jump starting to avoid permanent damage.

High quality, heavy duty Jump leads must be used as the current consumption during starting is very high, and a voltage loss will be
exhibited though the jump leads, increasing current requirement.

Make sure that the Jump Start battery is of the same voltage as the vehicle, and suitable to provide the required starting current.

MAKE SURE THAT THE ENDS OF THE JUMP LEADS DO NOT TOUCH EACH OTHER OR GROUND AGAINST THE VEHICLE BODY AT ANY TIME WHILE THE LEADS ARE ATTACHED TO THE BATTERY. ARCING AND VERY RAPID DISCHARGE CAN CAUSE THE BATTERY TO EXPLODE.

Connect the jump leads in the following sequence.
Connect Positive Jump Lead to Jump Start battery positive terminal.
Connect Positive Jump Lead to Vehicle battery positive terminal.
Connect Negative Jump Lead to Jump Start battery negative terminal.
Connect Negative Jump Lead to a suitable vehicle ground point at least, 300 mm (12 in) from the battery terminal e.g. engine lifting bracket, do not do not connect directly to the vehicle battery terminal.

Start the vehicle and rev to 2000 rpm, then allow tickover for 5-10 minutes.

Do not attempt continued repeated starting of the vehicle, this will cause heat build up at the terminals and though the jump leads degrading the leads performance and adding to voltage loss.

Allow 3-4 minutes recovery time for the leads and Jump Start battery between attempts to start.

Before disconnecting the jump leads, switch on the heated rear screen, to reduce the alternator voltage peak when the leads are removed, as this can damage electronic equipment.

Disconnect the jump leads in the reverse order to the connecting sequence taking great care not to short the ends of the leads.

Do not rely on the alternator to restore a discharged battery.
Ensure that the battery is recharged or replaced with a fully recharged unit
as soon as possible.

Following Jump-starting of a compleately discharged battery, you may need to carry out a Green ECM drive Cycle, this will allow the powertrain control module to 're-learn' idle values, and most likely need to re-enter your radio code, details of these can be found at. http://www.bluejag.co.uk

Caution: Before servicing any electrical component, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position and all electrical loads must be OFF, unless instructed otherwise in these procedures. If a tool or equipment could easily come in contact with a live exposed electrical terminal, also disconnect the negative battery cable. Failure to follow these precautions may cause personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
  2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.

  5. Remove the positive battery cable lead from the starter.

You do not need to remove the battery to charge the battery. When you connect the charger you MUST be careful to connect the charger's positive lead to the positive terminal to the battery and the negative lead to the negative lead to the battery before you turn on the battery charger. Connecting the charger leads the wrong way around most likely damage the vehicle's electronics.
When you finish charging the battery turn off the charger before you disconnect the charger leads. This will prevent arcing between the leads and the battery.

Where is my starter? i need to get it started to bring it to a friend to replace the starter...was told to bang on it...it's a 96 pathfinder


it is underneath the car, just follow the pos lead from the battery, since you are going to bang on it, you might as well take a screwdriver and arc it across the starter terminals as someone turns the key, it will arc but it will start. Good Luck Tim

Battery has 12,26 volts,i connected positive lead drew small arc ,turned ignition switch ,nothing worked.there is no dash lights.door locks,window controls nothing works.what might be the problem?


Your problem is probably gonna end up being a fusable link... This is more complicated than a backyard mechanic should tackle, so I suggest you get it to your local mechanic...

When attempting to jump start the vehicle positive battery cable heats up and smokes. What should be connected to the solenoid switch on the same post as the positive battery cable?


there should be charging leads from the alternator, and a feed wire leading to the main power/relay box just behind the solinoid. there might also be a few more leads depending on your truck. There should only be one on the other side leading to the starter. you need to replace that battery cable, a bad cable can cause symptoms similar to a dead battery

Check the battery terminals. If they have become corroded you could be getting a bad connection. When the starter is engaged it creates such a power load at the connections that it will arc and loose power. Or, you could have a bad ground wire off the battery. Also check the positive cable leading down to the starter. Most of the mustangs had the battery cable leading to the starter between the engine and the exhaust manifold. Eventually they melt through and can cause a short. This would require replacing the cable. Good luck.
